Job Overview

The Nutritional Care Assistant plays a vital role within the Dietetic team, delivering essential nutritional support to patients at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust.

This position encompasses both administrative responsibilities and clinical tasks, focusing on patients who have previously consulted with a Dietitian and are now assigned to be evaluated by a Nutritional Care Assistant for oral nutrition support.

Additionally, the role involves conducting nutrition education sessions for other healthcare staff, including ward housekeepers and support workers.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to engage in relevant training and development opportunities, which include mandatory training, Continuing Professional Development sessions within the Dietetic and Therapy teams, and peer review activities.

Key Responsibilities

- Organise and execute administrative tasks for the Dietetic team.

- Oversee and manage the inventory of patient information leaflets, oral nutritional supplement samples, and feeding equipment for patient discharges.

- Facilitate the safe and timely discharge and transition of patients receiving Dietetic services.

- Assist in the coordination of events and informational stands that the Dietetic team participates in.

- Accurately collect and document data on relevant systems.

- Demonstrate competency in taking and recording basic anthropometric measurements, such as weights, heights, and mid-upper arm circumferences.

- Acquire a foundational understanding of how to operate feeding pumps and related equipment.

- Support the Food Service Dietitian with catering-related tasks as needed.

- Aid the Dietetic team in promoting the referral criteria to multidisciplinary team members.

- Assist with the training, implementation, and auditing of the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST).

- Plan, prioritise, and manage a caseload of patients who have been previously assessed by a Dietitian and are now assigned to a Nutritional Care Assistant for oral nutrition support.

- Independently consult with patients and develop and implement oral nutrition support plans.

- Understand the variety of special diet menus offered by the Trust.

Job Requirements

Education

Essential

  • RQF level 2 qualifications (GCSE - grades 4 or C or above) in Maths and English.
  • RQF level 3 qualification such as A level, level 3 national diploma, T level, or equivalent experience.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working with individuals, such as in customer service roles or through volunteer work.

Desirable

  • Experience in a healthcare environment, which may include volunteer work or personal experience.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficient in effective communication, both written and verbal, in a clear and logical manner.
