Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the selection process, candidates must meet the following essential requirements:

  • Completion of LFR All Hazard Command Level 1 (CM) (external candidates will be invited to complete this prior to the selection day).
  • Proven experience and competence in the role of operational Firefighter or Crew Manager within a UK Local Authority Fire and Rescue Service.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities in accordance with the NFCC Leadership Framework.
  • No active or pending disciplinary actions or live sanctions.
  • No current or pending capability plans, including any informal management actions documented outside formal meetings as per applicable policies.
  • Current Fitness Test results indicating a minimum predicted VO2 Max of 42mls/02/kg/min.
  • Possession of the IFE Level 3 Certificate in Fire Science, Operations, Fire Safety, and Management, which includes the following mandatory units:
    • Unit 1: Fire Engineering Science (*Desirable)
    • Unit 2: Fire Operations
    • Unit 3: Fire Safety (or equivalent, e.g., Level 3 Certificate in Fire Safety)
    • Unit 4: Management and Administration

*Candidates who have not completed Unit 1: Fire Engineering Science may still participate in the selection process. Successful candidates will be required to sign a learning agreement to complete Unit 1 within two years. While Unit 1 is not mandatory for initial eligibility, candidates with the complete suite of IFE qualifications will be given preference.

Selection Process Overview

The selection process for the Crew Manager position will consist of the following components:

  • A written report
  • A presentation
  • An interview with a panel
  • A practical training session
