Ipswich, Suffolk, United Kingdom Suffolk County Council Full time

Suffolk County Council - Ipswich

Salary: £22,472 - £23,660 per annum (plus 15% shift enhancement)

Hours: 29.4 hours per week

Employment Type: Permanent

Reference: 0774

We are seeking an enthusiastic Emergency Response Specialist to become a vital member of our Home Emergency Alarm Response Service (HEARS) team.

As part of a dedicated unit, you will provide a crucial 24/7 service for Suffolk County Council.

Our Emergency Response Specialists deliver immediate assistance to HEARS clients throughout Ipswich and its neighboring areas. The team is trained in first aid and manual handling, ensuring the safety and comfort of individuals who may have fallen or sustained injuries, thus supporting their independence within their homes.

Daily Responsibilities

The daytime role will be based at the council headquarters, responding to emergency calls from this central location.

In addition to emergency responses, the team is responsible for the installation and retrieval of alarms, as well as performing essential administrative tasks to maintain service efficiency.

Night shifts are conducted from your residence on an on-call basis, requiring proximity to the council's operational boundary.

Shift Patterns

The HEARS team operates on a 24-hour shift schedule:

Day Shift: 06:50hrs - 19:10hrs

Night Shift: 19:00hrs - 07:00hrs

Full-time Schedule

A standard full-time shift pattern consists of 8 weeks of 2-day shifts, followed by 2-night shifts, with a 4-day break before the cycle repeats.

Every 9 weeks, all Specialists participate in a float period, covering 42 hours of shifts over a 14-day timeframe.

The total working hours are 29.4 per week, adhering to the aforementioned shift pattern.

This position necessitates working during the day, night, and on public holidays.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for a reliable and motivated individual, preferably with experience in care or emergency response. The ability to remain calm and composed in urgent situations is essential, as you will provide potentially life-saving support to clients.

Strong communication skills are vital, particularly when interacting with older and vulnerable individuals. You will collaborate with various staff members, external organizations, and family members in a respectful and clear manner. Teamwork is crucial for the smooth operation of the service, and you should be capable of working closely with colleagues with minimal supervision due to the nature of 24/7 operations. Quick thinking and decisiveness are key attributes for this role.

Given the challenges faced by this client group, proficiency in using various technologies, including mobile devices and lifting equipment, is required.

A full UK driving license, an enhanced DBS check, and Police Vetting Clearance are prerequisites for this position.

While the following qualifications are preferred, training will be provided:

  • Level 3 First Aid at Work
  • Level 2 Moving and Assisting People

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, we offer:

  • A career average pension scheme
  • Generous holiday and sick pay entitlements
  • Subsidized parking for work and leisure
  • Public transport discounts
  • Free swimming and gym membership
  • Cycle purchase scheme
  • Extensive personal and professional development opportunities
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Hybrid working options
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • The chance to work alongside dedicated colleagues.
