Job Title: Strategic Plant Operator/Fitter

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Strategic Plant Operator/Fitter to join our team at Colas Rail UK. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of our plant and equipment, ensuring that our services are delivered to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate and maintain the Colas Rail Kirow Crane, Track Relaying Machines, and other plant equipment in accordance with Railway Standards and Manufacturers' Procedures.
  • Conduct daily and weekly safety checks, and report any issues or concerns to the Planning and Maintenance Team Leaders.
  • Complete detailed reports of any failures or breakdowns, and submit them to the Planning and Maintenance Team Leaders.
  • Work safely with due regard to your own and others' wellbeing, and communicate effectively with colleagues and customers.
  • Respond to service faults and failures, and report them to the Colas Rail Services Control Desk and Planning and Maintenance Team Leaders.
  • Undertake slinging and propping duties as required to establish a safe lift, and use spill kits to reduce the environmental impact of any oil spills.
  • Shut down machines safely, and carry out daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance and safety checks.
  • Assist the Maintenance Department with routine maintenance and repairs on other machines operated by Colas Rail Services.
  • Carry out repairs and maintenance to a high standard on a variety of On Track Machines operated by Colas Rail Services.
  • Report directly to the Planning and Maintenance Team Leaders, both on-site and while undertaking Depot duties.
  • Comply with all local and company rules or instructions on safety matters, and participate in company safety initiatives.
  • Undertake the duties of Kirow/ TRM Crane controlling and OTP crane controlling, COSS duties, Slinger duties, OTP Lift Planning, OTM Lift Planning, and assessments as the assessor.
  • Attend safety and team briefing sessions as required by the company, and complete all appropriate documentation for periodic maintenance.
  • Attend for work in compliance with a previously agreed roster, which will include weekends and night shifts.
  • Be prepared to attend off-site or on-site training to improve knowledge and competence of operations and maintenance techniques and practices.
  • Present for duty promptly and fit to carry out duties as required by company policy and procedures, and book on and off duty through the Colas Rail Services Control Desk at Rugby.
  • Be in possession of a full and valid UK road vehicle driving license, which must be presented for inspection by the company when required.
  • Participate fully and proactively in the company competency assessment programme, and raise close calls and safety concerns through the company's policy.
  • Work with/for other departments as per business needs, undertake training and assessments on other members of staff, and be on call requirements as and when the business needs.
Person Specification:
  • The job holder must have or be able to operate the Kirow Crane, Track Relaying Machines, and any other plant Colas Rail own in accordance with Railway Standards, Manufacturers' Procedures, and in possession to the instructions of the Crane Controller and Team Leaders.
  • The job holder must be self-driven and motivated to succeed, have a full UK driving license, and be willing to travel abroad for business needs.
  • The role involves lodging away when business needs, and the job holder must be able to work a shift pattern that will include days, nights, and weekends.
  • The job holder must be able to operate machines to business requirements, keep in date all relevant operation and maintenance competencies, and ensure compliance with all company standards and procedures when carrying out maintenance works.
  • The job holder must have good written and verbal communication skills, be able to work safely and under own initiative without supervision, and be physically fit and have passed the required company medical.
  • The job holder must be flexible, honest, and reliable, possess a structured methodical approach to problem-solving, and demonstrate the ability to work equally as well as an individual or as part of a team.
  • The job holder must have served any approved and appropriate apprenticeship either internal or external, and be willing to continue personal development through training.
  • The job holder must have a positive outlook on the requirement for continuous change to accommodate the current business needs, and have a minimum NVQ level 3 in either or all, mechanical, Hydraulics, and electronics or apprentice trained, or enrolled onto.
