Position Overview

The position is part of the Howden Group Underwriting team, which aims to achieve superior underwriting performance through exceptional capabilities and insights.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Group Head of Underwriting Analytics and the Group Head of Underwriting in establishing globally consistent standards for underwriting analytics and reporting, ensuring transparency and comparability across the Howden Group.
  • Oversee the creation of regular and ad hoc reports that facilitate the monitoring of product performance and identify areas needing further exploration.
  • Engage collaboratively with key stakeholders across the Howden Group, including Underwriting, Actuarial, Finance, and Risk, to define and track underwriting performance metrics.
  • Work with diverse datasets across various domains, demonstrating the ability to quickly grasp the commercial context when handling new data.
  • Support regional teams in producing historical and forecast underwriting performance metrics, aligned with existing planning processes.
  • Collaborate with Power BI Developers to create dashboards and reports that enable management to analyze business impacts effectively.
  • Implement insights that allow Howden to optimize relationships within the underwriting value chain, including brokers and capacity providers.
  • Coordinate reporting requests across regional underwriting performance teams, consolidating metrics for a comprehensive Group-wide perspective.
  • Facilitate data requests from external stakeholders, such as investors.
  • Conduct horizon scanning for next-generation analytical capabilities that could provide Howden with a competitive edge.
Essential Qualifications
  • In-depth understanding of data analytics and KPIs for managing underwriting performance in a multinational insurance environment.
  • Familiarity with underwriting processes and pricing models in specialty markets.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in (re)insurance, particularly in analytical roles (e.g., actuarial, portfolio management, catastrophe modeling, financial analysis).
  • A proven track record of delivering impactful insights to senior underwriting stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal and people management skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with senior stakeholders.
  • A consultative and collaborative approach, actively listening to colleagues while also possessing the confidence to challenge when necessary.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, with strong SQL and Excel (including VBA) skills. Familiarity with Power BI and programming languages is a plus.
  • An understanding of key actuarial processes, including reserving, rate changes, and premium adequacy analysis.
  • Strong commercial awareness and knowledge of current industry issues.
  • Pragmatic, with the ability to translate data analytics into actionable insights for business stakeholders.
  • A keen attention to detail, consistently delivering high-quality work in a timely manner, and capable of validating data from regional teams.
  • Highly organized, with effective planning, prioritization, and time management skills.
