Junior Clinical Research Associate

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Imperial College London Full time

Position Overview: We are looking for a motivated and dedicated junior clinical research associate (post-FY2 and above) to assist in a groundbreaking study focused on beta-blocker symptoms in heart failure, aimed at enhancing patient decision-making and optimizing care.

Study Background: The ENABLE-HF study (pErsonalised Nocebo Assessment of Beta-blockEr symptoms in Heart Failure) has received a significant project grant from a leading health foundation. This research will involve individuals who have previously discontinued beta-blocker therapy for heart failure due to perceived adverse effects. These individuals are currently missing out on the critical benefits that beta-blockers can provide.

Research Objectives: Our goal is to create, for the first time, a tailored system that will help patients understand whether the symptoms that led to the discontinuation of beta-blockers are attributable to the medication itself or other factors such as heart failure, random chance, or psychological expectations (the 'nocebo effect').

Participant Engagement: Each participant will follow a personalized protocol involving several weeks of taking beta-blocker tablets, placebo tablets, and no tablets. Participants will report their daily experiences through an app or via telephone. At the conclusion of the study, we will present them with their personalized findings to assist in their decision regarding the continuation of beta-blocker therapy.

Importance of the Study: This research is crucial not only for empowering patients to make informed medication choices but also for developing this protocol as a potential intervention for other chronic conditions requiring life-saving medications. This role is ideal for individuals with interests or experience in heart failure, chronic disease management, psychology, telemedicine, and digital health.

Team Environment: You will be part of a vibrant and passionate team of clinical researchers specializing in heart failure, integrated within a larger, well-established research group. This group has a proven track record of producing innovative and impactful studies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and Academic Duties:
    • Identifying and screening potential study participants.
    • Conducting enrollment consultations, including vital sign assessments.
    • Participating in weekly multidisciplinary team meetings.
    • Assisting patients with app setup on their devices.
    • Managing study data and maintaining the database.
    • Contacting participants to fill in data gaps.
    • Handling study-related inquiries from participants.
    • Coordinating with various stakeholders for study administration.
    • Ensuring compliance with governance and attending relevant meetings.
    • Conducting periodic audits of the study.
    • Supporting the preparation and presentation of research manuscripts.
  • Clinical Responsibilities:
    • Acting as the primary clinical contact for participants throughout the study.
    • Managing communications from patients regarding general medical concerns.
    • Gaining extensive experience in chronic heart failure management.
    • Opportunity to join a staff bank for additional clinical shifts.
    • Observing practices in a busy cardiology service.
    • Mapping experiences to relevant curriculum competencies.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Qualified medical doctor with valid registration.
  • Completion of UK foundation training or equivalent.
  • Desirable knowledge of good clinical practice and relevant experience.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Highly motivated, proactive, and ambitious candidates are encouraged.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills are essential.
  • Proficiency in IT, including MS Office and database management.
  • Experience in programming for biomedical statistics is a plus.
  • Prior experience in clinical research and managing heart failure patients is highly desirable.

Benefits:

  • Opportunity to advance your career at a prestigious institution.
  • Competitive salary and comprehensive remuneration package.
  • Generous leave policy.
