DE&S Deca is a dedicated division of Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) focused on the maintenance, repair, overhaul, upgrade, procurement, and managed services for Defence electronics, components, and general equipment support. As a Surface Finish Technician, your role will involve preparing and refinishing a diverse array of equipment, including ground support gear, wooden structures, aircraft components, aircrew helmets, and airborne gas cylinders.

You will be responsible for restoring and applying specialized coatings to equipment, adhering to high standards as per approved specifications and work instructions, utilizing specific tools and equipment such as pneumatic, airless, and electrostatic systems.

This position requires you to have resided in the UK for the past five years and to obtain security clearance without any restrictions that would impede your ability to perform the duties of the role. If security clearance is not obtained, or if it is obtained with restrictions that hinder your ability to fulfill the role, any conditional offer may be rescinded. The process for obtaining SC security clearance can be lengthy, and we reserve the right to withdraw any conditional offer if the necessary clearance is not achieved within a specified timeframe.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adherence to regulatory and organizational standards, including Health and Safety legislation.
  • Conducting inspections on breathing air and equipment to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Understanding and complying with statutory, quality, and organizational standards for aviation, including safety protocols, documentation, and occupational health and safety in an aviation context.
  • Ensuring safe storage of materials, managing stock rotation, maintaining batch controls, and disposing of expired stock and waste products appropriately.
  • Measuring and documenting the usage of Volatile Organic Compounds, air movement, and temperatures in Spray Bays, as well as the thickness of coatings and viscosity of mixed paint as required.
  • Monitoring the correct use of hand-operated tools in relation to Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) and ensuring limits are not exceeded.
  • Prioritizing and coordinating workflow and tasks within the Paint Section in collaboration with Team Leaders and team members.
  • Certifying that tasks are executed in accordance with established work instructions.

Candidate Profile

To be considered for this position, you must demonstrate that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Completion of an Engineering Apprenticeship, Armed Forces equivalent such as RAF Trade Group 13 Painter and Finisher, or an equivalent industry-recognized standard such as ICATS (Industrial Coatings Application Training Scheme).
  • Proficiency in the use of paint spraying equipment, shot-blasting booths, and plastic media cabinets.
  • Knowledge of preparation processes including degreasing, pre-treatments, masking, filling, and sanding.
  • Familiarity with fiberglass and body filler repairs.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and understand engineering data, drawings, specifications, manuals, and computer-generated information.
  • Proficient in IT, including Microsoft Office applications.
