Research Opportunity in Miniaturized Robotics

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated PhD researcher to join our team at the University of Nottingham. The successful candidate will work on a 3-year project in partnership with the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) to develop a novel miniaturized robotic end-effector for welding and repairing tasks in confined and challenging spaces.

About the Project

The project will focus on the intelligent design, manufacturing, and testing of a miniaturized robotic end-effector. The researcher will work closely with industrial partners to develop precision mechatronics systems and algorithms, and will have the opportunity to collaborate with experts in the field of robotics and nuclear energy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop a miniaturized robotic end-effector for welding and repairing tasks in confined spaces
  • Develop precision mechatronics systems and algorithms for the end-effector
  • Collaborate with industrial partners to integrate the end-effector with existing systems
  • Conduct experiments and testing to validate the performance of the end-effector
Requirements
  • First or upper second class degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills, with a well-rounded academic background
  • Experience with relevant software packages, such as MATLAB, SolidWorks, and ROS
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Funding and Benefits

The scholarship on offer comprises a tax-free EPSRC stipend level (£18,622 a year), tuition fees paid, and a generous study package. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work on a novel mechatronics system with strong links to industrial applications and key skills and knowledge in preparation for a high-impact, high-technology research or industrial career.
