We are excited to present an exceptional opportunity for a dedicated and skilled oncology nurse to step into the role of Assistant Ward Leader within the Oncology Unit at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This position is a fixed-term contract designed to cover a temporary absence.

The primary responsibility of the Assistant Ward Leader is to support the Ward Leader in delivering both clinical and administrative guidance on the unit. This role provides a unique chance to gain valuable insights into ward management while receiving mentorship to cultivate the essential skills and knowledge required for the position.

We seek an innovative nursing professional eager to enhance their leadership capabilities, equipped with problem-solving skills, and motivated to assist the Ward Leader in clinical audits and research initiatives, while also mentoring junior staff and nursing students.

Key Responsibilities

The ideal candidate should possess or be pursuing a degree-level qualification and have a minimum of two years' experience in oncology nursing. Specialized training in cancer care is a prerequisite.

Responsibilities in Patient Care

Professional Practice

  • Ensure clinical practices are evidence-based or aligned with peer-reviewed best practices.

  • Utilize Trust information technology systems effectively, ensuring accurate and timely data entry in compliance with Trust policies.
  • Promote a paper-light approach to information management.
  • Stay informed through email and other communication channels regarding Trust-wide updates.
  • Understand and promote accountability, responsibility, and duty of care, providing support and education to less experienced staff.

Leadership and Management

  • Foster positive interpersonal relationships among the multidisciplinary team to ensure a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  • Act as a deputy for the Ward Leader in their absence, demonstrating effective problem-solving skills in clinical and management scenarios.
  • Serve as shift coordinator, overseeing resource allocation to ensure effective patient care and safety.
  • Take initiative in specific responsibilities assigned by the Ward Leader, including off-duty planning and monitoring of leave and absences.
  • Understand budgetary constraints and their implications, acting as a budgetary signatory when required.
  • Ensure daily input of patient acuity and staffing tools is consistent and effective.
  • Adhere to the Health and Social Care Act regulations, ensuring compliance with Care Quality Commission standards.
  • Manage clinical and general waste appropriately.
  • Ensure optimal use of staffing resources in care and treatment implementation.
  • Report incidents, complaints, and emergencies according to departmental protocols, assisting in investigations as necessary.
  • Comply with Health and Safety Regulations, escalating concerns to senior staff promptly.
  • Familiarize with the Oxford Model of Exemplary Nursing and Midwifery Practice, ensuring key performance indicators are met.
  • Contribute to the development of standards of practice in collaboration with team leaders.
  • Discuss personal and professional development needs during appraisals, documenting action points in the electronic personal development plan.

Essential Qualifications and Attributes

  • Demonstrated commitment to patient-centered care, fostering a spirit of support, integrity, respect, and teamwork.
  • Registered Nurse (with appropriate registration) or national certification in the relevant area of practice.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and maintenance of NMC revalidation.
  • Minimum of three years of experience as a registered nurse in acute care settings.
  • Evidence of a Nursing and Midwifery (NMC) approved Mentorship qualification.
