London, Greater London, United Kingdom Ministry of Defence Full time

Position Overview

The Ministry of Defence employs a substantial workforce of over 50,000 Civil Servants, with approximately 7,000 of these individuals dedicated to the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) across more than 300 locations. Our organization thrives on diversity, encompassing a wide range of roles from trainers and human resources professionals to psychologists and project managers.

This role presents an exciting opportunity to become an integral part of the support team at 14 Regiment Royal Artillery, which focuses on providing essential education and training to Army personnel on the operation of military vehicles.

We are looking to expand our current team of instructors with two newly established positions. As a civil servant collaborating with the Army, you will join a progressive organization that values inclusivity, offers excellent career advancement opportunities, and provides a meaningful contribution to the Army's mission. The Army is committed to being a supportive employer and promotes flexible working arrangements to help maintain a healthy work/life balance.

Key Responsibilities

The Driving Instructor will be responsible for guiding newly qualified Army drivers through Service Driver Conversion (SDC) Courses. The primary duties include:

  • Instructing trainees on the theoretical aspects of driving military vehicles in accordance with established standards.
  • Educating trainees on motor transport documentation.
  • Training individuals on the operation of military vehicles on public roads and off-road terrains, both during the day and at night, adhering to policy standards.
  • Providing instruction on additional SDC-related skills, including vehicle components, convoy and tactical driving techniques, camouflage usage, vehicle maintenance, breakdown protocols, accident procedures, securing vehicle loads, and route card utilization.
  • Overseeing testing processes and managing related documentation.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants must possess a Category C Driving Licence (held for a minimum of 2 years with no more than 3 penalty points) and a C+E Licence for at least 3 months. Due to the nature of the role involving interaction with individuals under 18, successful candidates will be required to undergo a DBS (Disclosure Barring Services) Security clearance check.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Deliver specialized training effectively.
  • Conduct both formal and informal assessments.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to students in a vocational training context.

Essential Behaviours

During the selection process, candidates will be evaluated based on the following behaviours:

  • Leadership
  • Effective Decision-Making
  • Communication and Influence

Evidence of leadership capabilities is required in the application form.

Compensation and Benefits

The position offers a salary of £28,300, with the Ministry of Defence contributing £7,641 towards membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. The Army is dedicated to fostering a supportive work environment and encourages flexible working arrangements to promote a healthy work/life balance.

Additional benefits for Army civil servants include:

  • 25 days of paid annual leave, increasing to 30 days after 5 years of service.
  • A highly competitive pension scheme.
  • Opportunities for personal and professional skill development.
  • Alternative working patterns for various roles.
  • Access to the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), a complimentary service designed to support a productive and healthy work environment.
  • Enhanced parental and adoption leave.
  • 6 days of special leave annually for volunteering activities.
  • Learning and Development opportunities.

We believe in the potential of every individual to make a difference and will support you in your learning and career advancement. This includes pathways to professional qualifications and modern apprenticeships as part of your role.

Local Amenities

On-site benefits include:

  • Free parking and convenient access to public transport.
  • An on-site shop and coffee facilities.
  • Complimentary gym access for members of the Civil Service Sports and Leisure Club.

Where operational needs permit, some roles may allow for a combination of office and remote working arrangements. This is a non-contractual option, with a minimum expectation of 60% of working time spent in the office, subject to capacity and necessary adjustments.

Additional Information

External recruits who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period. Please note that expenses incurred for travel to interviews will not be reimbursed.
