London, Greater London, United Kingdom Ministry of Defence Full time

Position Overview

The Ministry of Defence is a significant employer with a diverse workforce of over 50,000 Civil Servants, including approximately 7,000 within the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) across more than 300 locations. Our roles encompass a wide range of professions, from trainers and human resources to project managers and policy advisors.

This role presents an exciting opportunity to become an essential member of the support team at 14 Regiment Royal Artillery, which focuses on providing comprehensive education and training for military vehicle operation.

We are looking to expand our current team with two newly established instructor positions. As a civil servant collaborating with the Army, you will be part of a progressive organization that values inclusivity, offers excellent career development opportunities, and provides a meaningful work experience. The Army is committed to being a supportive employer, promoting flexible working arrangements to help you achieve a healthy work/life balance.

Key Responsibilities

The Driving Instructor will be responsible for guiding newly qualified Army drivers through Service Driver Conversion (SDC) Courses. The role includes:

  • Instructing trainees on the theoretical aspects of driving military vehicles in accordance with established standards.
  • Educating trainees on the necessary motor transport documentation.
  • Training trainees on how to operate military vehicles on public roads and in off-road conditions, both during the day and at night.
  • Providing instruction on various SDC-related skills, including vehicle components, convoy driving, tactical driving techniques, vehicle maintenance, and emergency procedures.
  • Overseeing testing processes and managing related documentation.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants must possess a Category C Driving Licence (held for a minimum of 2 years with no more than 3 penalty points) and a C+E Licence for at least 3 months. Due to the nature of the role involving individuals under 18, successful candidates will be required to undergo a DBS (Disclosure Barring Services) Security clearance check.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Deliver specialized training effectively.
  • Conduct both formal and informal assessments.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to students in a vocational training context.

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary of £28,300, the Ministry of Defence contributes £7,641 towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. The Army is dedicated to fostering a supportive work environment and encourages flexible working arrangements.

Additional benefits for Army civil servants include:

  • 25 days of paid annual leave, increasing to 30 days after 5 years of service.
  • A highly competitive pension scheme.
  • Opportunities for personal and professional skill development.
  • Access to the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for support in maintaining a healthy work environment.
  • Enhanced parental and adoption leave.
  • 6 days of special leave annually for volunteering activities.

We believe in the potential of every individual to make a difference, and you will receive support to enhance your skills and advance your career, including opportunities for professional qualifications and apprenticeships.

Work Environment

Local benefits include free onsite parking, access to an onsite shop and coffee facilities, and complimentary gym access for members of the Civil Service Sports and Leisure Club. Some roles may allow for a combination of office and home-based working, subject to operational needs.

The Ministry of Defence is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment, promoting a smoke-free policy across all Defence establishments.

We value your feedback and may contact you regarding your experience to help us improve our services.
