We are seeking an individual to lead our dedicated and enthusiastic Governance Team. This pivotal role offers the opportunity to oversee the Governance Team at Derbyshire County Council, managing the formal meetings of the Council.
The ideal candidate will possess experience in leading a Governance team within a local authority or a similar sector, or demonstrate a strong desire to develop in this area. You should be capable of providing effective guidance to team members while managing a substantial workload independently. Operating at a corporate level, you will need to exhibit a solid understanding of the Council's objectives and how to achieve them, along with your extensive experience.
The successful applicant will offer expert counsel to senior officials, including the Assistant Director of Governance & Monitoring Officer, the Managing Director, Directors, and Elected Members. Your advisory role will encompass the management of democratic processes, including both Executive and non-Executive functions, as well as the Cabinet and Scrutiny Committees.
Additionally, you will provide guidance on the operation of the Constitution and engage with the Standards Committee during its annual review. A key aspect of this role will be to enhance the skills and expertise of the individuals within your team, aligning with the Council's One Team ethos.
This position will also involve the introduction of relevant new technologies and the implementation of enhancements to existing systems.
To excel in this role, you must be politically savvy, diplomatic, and capable of responding positively to challenges and tight deadlines. Your leadership will ensure robust governance for the Council and instill confidence in the services provided.
If selected for an interview, you will be expected to discuss the primary challenges facing the service and the significant changes you would propose if appointed. You will also need to demonstrate your management approach and how you would foster individual development within the Governance Team.
