Academic Lecturer in Design Studies
University of the Arts London (UAL) is seeking a part-time Lecturer in Contextual and Theoretical Studies to join our vibrant and research-focused team.
Contextual and Theoretical Studies (CTS) play a central role across the Design School at LCC, underpinning all undergraduate courses with a framework of critical, contextual, and theoretical thinking. This framework supports students in developing confident research, analysis, critique, and presentation skills linked to their emerging design interests.
You will work collaboratively with course teams to deliver CTS in an embedded framework, deploying specialist expertise to develop pedagogy and the curriculum that connects critical thinking with design practice. Additionally, you will be responsible for providing pastoral support to a group of students.
As part of our team, you will undertake teaching, curriculum development, administration, and assessment of units, as well as ongoing scholarship within a program. Reporting to the CTS Coordinator, you will work collaboratively with undergraduate course leaders and lecturers, as well as administrative and academic support staff.
This role offers an exciting opportunity to take an active role in the development of the CTS curriculum as the Design School works on interconnecting theory and practice across different design disciplines. The curriculum seeks to embed key principles and shared values centered on climate, racial, and social justice, as suggested by the Responsible Design Framework.
About YouYou will be someone who can combine teaching and assessment experience at Higher Education level with knowledge and critical understanding of the social, cultural, environmental, political, and economic issues that shape contemporary design practices and theoretical discourses. You will have a background in design history, science and technology studies, media studies, or an associated field. You will have specialist expertise in one of the following design areas: user experience design, information design, creative computing.
You will be able to apply innovative digital approaches to teaching and learning and apply your own research, including pedagogic research, to the development of learning and assessment practice and innovative approaches to course development and delivery. You will have an ability to motivate a team effectively, setting clear objectives to manage performance, and to collaborate and work within teams across different professional groups.
