Trainee Forest Technician

Position Overview
The East England Forest District (EEFD) encompasses a vast area of 35,000 hectares, stretching from North Norfolk to Brighton, and includes notable locations such as Thetford Forest. We are excited to offer apprenticeship opportunities within this expansive and ecologically significant region.
Thetford Forest, recognized as the largest lowland pine forest in the UK, is home to dedicated teams of professionals including Foresters, Work Supervisors, and Forest Craftspeople. As an apprentice, you will collaborate closely with these teams, gaining hands-on experience while participating in a structured training program.
Our annual initiatives include planting over 1 million trees and managing timber harvesting operations that yield approximately 80,000 tonnes of timber annually for the wood processing sector. Additionally, we are actively exploring adaptive forest management strategies to address the impacts of climate change.
Significant portions of Thetford Forest are designated for conservation, including Special Protection Areas (SPA) aimed at preserving habitats for various bird species and Sites of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI) that highlight the area's unique botanical features.
Role Responsibilities
This 18-month apprenticeship provides a unique opportunity to develop a diverse skill set across various forest and habitat management tasks.
Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Assisting in forest estate management activities such as timber measurement, fencing, planting, and habitat enhancement.
- Supporting timber harvesting operations, which may involve chainsaw felling and mechanical pruning.
- Collaborating effectively within a small team and responding promptly to tasks and requests from supervisors.
- Conducting tree inspections.
- Potentially receiving training for tractor operations.
This role requires outdoor manual labor in varying weather conditions, demanding teamwork, enthusiasm, and the ability to perform across a spectrum of skills and tasks.
We seek individuals who are welcoming, enthusiastic, and approachable, with a readiness to engage in team discussions and interact positively with visitors.
Training and Development
As part of your apprenticeship, you will pursue the Forest Operative Level 3 qualification and receive training in:
- Emergency first aid at work (forestry context)
- Safe handling and application of pesticides
- Safe use of brush-cutters and strimmers
- Chainsaw maintenance and operation
- Felling and processing trees
Throughout the apprenticeship, you will attend formal training sessions, which may require travel and overnight stays. You will also maintain a portfolio documenting your progress and learning.
Successful completion of the apprenticeship will lead to a potential position within the Forestry Commission, though specific location assignments cannot be guaranteed.
Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications
- Demonstrated interest in outdoor work, forestry, conservation, or countryside management.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
- Willingness to learn and develop new practical skills.
- Basic computer and mobile technology proficiency.
Preferred Experience
- Familiarity with MS Office applications.
- Relevant academic qualifications in Maths and English.
- Possession of a full UK Driving Licence.
Please ensure your application clearly reflects how you meet these criteria, as this will be a key factor in the selection process.

- Team collaboration
- Quality service management
- Ability to deliver results efficiently
- Decision-making skills

In addition to a competitive salary, the Forestry Commission offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:
