Antihydrogen Physics Research Associate

London, Greater London, United Kingdom The University of Manchester Full time

Position Overview: The ALPHA initiative at CERN tackles a fundamental question in physics: understanding the differences between matter and antimatter that have influenced our matter-dominated universe. This project emphasizes precise atomic physics measurements to reveal subtle distinctions between trapped antihydrogen and hydrogen atoms.

Project Focus: The ALPHA-g experiment specifically utilizes magnetic fields to counteract the effects of gravitational potential on antimatter. This role will involve pioneering efforts to quantitatively assess the acceleration of antihydrogen in response to Earth's gravitational influence. The chosen candidate will play a pivotal role in developing innovative magnetic control and magnetometry techniques for both the ALPHA-g gravitational study and the ALPHA spectroscopy framework.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manipulating trapped electron plasmas for application as magnetometers.
  • Designing and implementing electronics to improve and optimize the control of the antihydrogen magnetic trap system.
  • Contributing to the wider ALPHA physics program, which includes gravitational assessments and general spectroscopy initiatives.

Qualifications: Candidates should possess significant experimental expertise with trapped ions or leptons, particularly in plasma physics. A solid foundation in magnetic field calculations and familiarity with technologies associated with superconducting magnets, including power supplies and cryogenics, is essential. Proficiency in charged-particle simulation tools such as GPT, Opera, and COMSOL, along with experience in laboratory control software like LabVIEW, is expected.

Diversity and Inclusion: As an equal opportunities employer, we encourage applications from all segments of the community, regardless of age, sex, gender identity, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, or transgender status. All selections are based on merit.

Flexible Working: Our institution supports flexible working arrangements.

Application Process: Please note that we are unable to respond to inquiries or accept CVs or applications from recruitment agencies.

Further Information: For inquiries regarding the vacancy, shortlisting, and interviews, please refer to the contact details provided in the Further Particulars document.
