Lead Scientific Research Officer

Glasgow, Glasgow City, United Kingdom Professor Doctor Obi Full time £28,344 - £45,357

Project Focus: Pyrimidine Metabolism in Cancer Prevention

Contract Duration: Fixed for 18 months

About the Organization

The CRUK Scotland Institute is a premier cancer research facility located in Glasgow, hosting around 250 researchers across 30 specialized research teams, including Principal Investigators, postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates, and scientific officers. Renowned as one of Europe's top cancer research centers, it facilitates groundbreaking investigations into the molecular foundations of cancer progression. Supported by Cancer Research UK and bolstered by external funding from grants and industry partnerships, the Institute is celebrated for its fundamental cancer research, particularly in metabolism and in vivo tumor growth and metastasis modeling. The Institute's research culture emphasizes excellence, transparency, accountability, and integrity.

Research Background

Previous investigations have revealed that modified immune and metabolic environments can promote metastasis. Notably, we have observed an increase in pyrimidine catabolism in activated neutrophils, with heightened levels of uridine phosphorylase 1 (UPP1) identified in neutrophils from tumor-bearing models compared to normal controls. Crucially, neutrophils exhibiting high UPP1 levels display altered behaviors that create microenvironments conducive to cancer cell colonization.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Scientific Officer to engage in a project evaluating UPP1's role in early disease and cancer prevention. Candidates should possess a degree in a scientific field pertinent to cancer biology, along with a minimum of 3 to 4 years of hands-on laboratory experience. While a PhD is highly desirable, it is not mandatory. This position may be particularly suitable for individuals who have recently completed their PhD and are awaiting their viva. The project will involve utilizing mouse models of mammary cancer, conducting flow cytometry analyses of immune cell populations, and performing metabolic assessments of cells and tissues. Although training will be provided for flow cytometry and metabolomic techniques, ideal candidates will have substantial experience with mouse models and preferably hold a UK Home Office Personal Licence. The project will be supervised by Dr. Cassie Clarke and conducted within the laboratory of Professor Jim Norman at the CRUK Scotland Institute.

Successful candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, possess strong communication and organizational skills, maintain accurate records and database management, and exhibit a keen motivation to learn new techniques and advance experimental work to enhance our understanding of immunometabolism in early disease and cancer prevention.
