Job Summary

This is a management role within the Ministry of Justice, responsible for the Food Services department in a prison establishment. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the provision of meals for prisoners and maintaining a safe working environment in the kitchen.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Ensure the quality and quantity of meals served meet the required standards.
  2. Monitor and maintain a safe working environment, including reporting equipment faults and requesting repairs.
  3. Verify and sign off documentation related to Service Levels Indicators.
  4. Comply with Food Safety Management systems and Hygiene Assessments.
  5. Manage the catering budget, including estimating, ordering, and utilizing resources effectively.
  6. Act as a point of contact for external and internal stakeholders visiting the kitchen.
  7. Responsible for prisoner workforce in the kitchens, ensuring they are appropriately inducted, trained, supervised, and paid.
  8. Implement national policy and contribute to the development of local policy, procedures, and practice for catering.
  9. Collect, collate, analyze, and act on data concerning the catering function.
  10. Train wing food handlers on hygiene standards.
  11. Carry out kitchen inspections, audit preparation, and documentation for audit purposes.
Other Management Tasks
  1. Manage devolved budgets in accordance with financial procedures.
  2. Responsible for the management of all staff within their area, including staff performance, development, and annual appraisal.
  3. Ensure all HMPPS standards and Service Delivery Indicators are implemented and managed within the relevant work area.
  4. Ensure all national and local policies and procedures are implemented and compliant.
  5. Attend relevant boards/meetings and contribute to discussions.
  6. Provide leadership and direction to supervisors and staff within their defined work area.
  7. Produce relevant reports and ensure all correspondence is replied to within agreed timescales.
  8. Liaise and form good relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  9. Contribute to the preparation of the prison contingency and emergency plans.
  10. Manage resources to deliver activities within the defined work area.
Requirements
  • Must hold qualifications and competences of F&S Supervisor – Catering.
  • Must hold a Food Hygiene Level 4 Diploma or equivalent Level 4 award in HACCP.
  • Must be familiar with applying all current health, safety, and hygiene-related regulations in a working kitchen environment.
Working Arrangements

The Ministry of Justice offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. This is an informal, non-contractual form of flexible working that blends working from your base location, different MoJ sites, and/or from home.
