SEND Mediations Coordinator

Torbay Council is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mediations Coordinator to join their Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) team.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee the Mediations, Appeals, and Tribunals processes for children and young people with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan.
- Work in a small team to solve complex problems and ensure that children and young people have provision and placement that meets their identified needs.
- Collaborate with schools, colleges, health, and social care teams to achieve successful outcomes.
- Champion the child or young person and work in a co-produced and restorative manner.
- Experience of working with children and young people with a range of special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and their families.
- Good working knowledge of current and emerging SEND-related legislation and legal processes, as well as the SEND Code of Practice.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and identify priorities when faced with competing demands.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain strong and positive working relationships with families, schools, and other professionals.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- A high level of written and oral communication skills.
- Significant decision-making skills, with the ability to analyse information, draw conclusions, and effect judgements based on outcomes and risk.
- Proven problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify causes, make objective and informed judgements, and demonstrate emotional resilience and balance.
- Ability to deal with difficult and challenging situations with tact and sensitivity.
- A thorough understanding of current legislation and DfE guidance and developments in special educational needs.
- A broad understanding of issues surrounding general developments in educational assessment and intervention.
- Knowledge of legislation and procedures relating to assessment and provision for children with special educational needs.
- An understanding of the implications of emerging changes to legislation relating to special educational needs.
- Educated to GCSE level (or equivalent) with English (A-C).
- Experience of working in schools.
- Significant experience of work in relation to young people and children with special educational needs.
- Experience of effective working with parents and carers.
- Experience of working to deadlines and making robust, evidence-informed decisions.
