As an Attendance Improvement Officer, you will be part of a dedicated team that collaborates with educational institutions, families, and children to address attendance issues as part of the Children Missing Out On Education initiative. This initiative encompasses various teams including CME, Attendance, EHE, Exclusions, and the Pupil Tuition team.

Your role will involve working closely with other departments within Learning Inclusion to assess whether children are receiving an appropriate education. You will assist families in securing suitable educational opportunities for their children.

About the Role

This position is diverse and requires teamwork. You will engage with various agencies to support families in accessing education. As our next Attendance Improvement Officer, you will manage your own caseload and collaborate with numerous schools to provide guidance on attendance matters.

This role is vital to our broader team focused on the Children Missing Out On Education initiative.

Job Purpose

To ensure that children of compulsory school age, along with their families and schools, receive quality support to achieve optimal attendance in educational settings appropriate to the child's age, aptitude, and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance to families, schools, and other agencies on statutory requirements and best practices regarding school attendance, offering support and advice to help parents meet these requirements.
  • Initiate legal action when statutory obligations concerning school attendance are not fulfilled.
  • Initiate legal action when a child or young person is not receiving suitable education.
  • Document and compile accurate, up-to-date evidence to support legal proceedings, prepare legal reports for Attendance Team Managers, and provide testimony in court as necessary.
  • Assist individual schools in analyzing attendance records and enhancing attendance monitoring systems.
  • Deliver training on attendance processes to school staff and other services.
  • Manage attendance-related cases, collaborating closely with Attendance Team Managers and colleagues to implement statutory duties and legal orders.
  • Attend and lead multi-agency meetings concerning attendance issues.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of collaborative strategies aimed at improving school attendance, utilizing restorative approaches.
  • Take a lead role in implementing reintegration strategies for children missing or not in education, working alongside the EHE and CME teams to ensure adherence to local procedures.
  • Ensure that safeguarding considerations are integrated into all aspects of work, providing advice and support to schools and staff regarding safeguarding issues, including participation in child protection conferences and reviews.
  • Undertake additional duties as required by the Service.
  • Comply with all Leeds City Council policies, procedures, and staff instructions, including responsibilities under the Health and Safety Policy.
  • Actively promote and support Leeds City Council's Equal Opportunities Policies, working in an anti-oppressive manner.

Qualifications

  • Social Work Qualification; National Occupation Standards, NVQ Level 4 (or equivalent) (desirable)
