Position Overview
The Portsmouth Diocese is guided by a strategic framework known as the Jesus Centered strategy, which outlines our priorities and aspirations for growth in depth, impact, and numbers. Main Duties
Role Responsibilities
- Provide effective leadership to the Safeguarding Advisory Panel (DSAP), including setting the agenda in collaboration with the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA) or designated individual, ensuring minutes are agreed upon, chairing meetings, and monitoring follow-up actions.
- Ensure the DSAP fulfills its responsibilities in accordance with established terms of reference.
- Collaborate with the DSA and senior staff to maintain a strategic overview of safeguarding practices across the diocese, adhering to the House of Bishops' policy and practice guidance, along with implementing quality assurance and risk management processes.
- Consider the needs of victims/survivors and those impacted by abuse, along with providing relevant advice.
- Work alongside the DSA and senior leadership to ensure the DSAP is sufficiently resourced, possessing a diverse skill set and background among its members. Participate in recruitment and succession planning.
- Act as an informal point of contact for DSAs, the diocesan bishop, or nominated individuals/members of the group outside formal supervisory and management structures.
- Advise the diocesan bishop (or nominated individual) and senior leadership team on specific concerns or issues, raising and reporting any relevant matters as part of whistleblowing protocols when appropriate.
- Engage in national and regional network meetings for chairs as required.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Recent and extensive professional safeguarding experience at a senior level within relevant statutory, voluntary, or judicial agencies (e.g., local authority children and adult services, police, national children's charities).
- Experience in conducting case reviews, managing risks, and leading strategic partnerships.
- A confident and empowering leadership style, with the ability to strategically plan, manage meetings effectively, and influence stakeholders to enhance safeguarding practices.
- Current knowledge of multi-agency safeguarding practices, processes, legislation, and developments.
- The capability to promote and represent the DSAP at all organizational levels, both internally and externally.
