Position Overview

The Department of Gastroenterology at East Kent Hospitals is seeking a dedicated and passionate Consultant Gastroenterologist to enhance our services and contribute to the advancement of gastroenterology.

We deliver a comprehensive 7-day Consultant-led inpatient gastroenterology service across multiple acute hospital locations, including a 24/7 GI Bleed rota. Our specialized services encompass Nutrition, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Hepatology, Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) care, Upper Gastrointestinal (UGI) Cancer management, complex polypectomy, Bowel Cancer Screening, and capsule endoscopy. Endoscopy services are available at our primary hospital sites.

This position includes a recruitment incentive of up to £20,000.

Key Responsibilities

We are in search of a proactive Gastroenterologist to join the William Harvey Hospital team. Whether you are an experienced consultant or at the beginning of your consultant career, we are committed to supporting your professional development. You will have the opportunity to refine your specialist interests, whether in enhancing existing services or pioneering new initiatives such as GI physiology and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS). Our Trust is recognized for its exceptional complex polyp service, with international acclaim through the annual KENT course and collaborative efforts with colorectal specialists.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the GI Bleeding rota and manage a current 1:8 ward week in Gastroenterology, including support for emergency pathways.

Job Duties

The ideal candidate will be a committed professional who actively engages with the WHH Gastroenterology team. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology services.
  • Contributing to the development of specialized services.
  • Providing comprehensive care, diagnostic, and therapeutic interventions for patients with gastroenterological conditions.
  • Participating in the site-based GI bleed rota.
  • Conducting two outpatient clinics weekly and performing two general endoscopy lists, along with a session dedicated to a specialist interest.

Qualifications & Training

Essential:

  • Full GMC Registration.
  • CCST Specialist Registration in Gastroenterology or expected to obtain within six months of the interview.

Desirable:

  • MRCP (UK) certification.
  • Postgraduate qualifications in gastroenterology, such as MD, PhD, ESEGH, or equivalent.
