Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our Gastroenterology team. This role is pivotal in supporting the Lead Consultant for upper gastrointestinal referrals, ensuring a seamless patient journey from initial referral through to diagnosis and treatment.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the primary contact for patients referred to the upper GI service, guiding them and their families through the care pathway.
- Manage electronic patient referrals and coordinate timely assessments and investigations.
- Collaborate closely with the Lead Consultant to establish and implement effective management plans for patients with unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms.
- Identify and address the comprehensive needs—physical, social, and psychological—of patients suspected of having colorectal cancer.
Management Duties
- Collect and analyze data related to patient pathways, ensuring timely follow-ups and identifying areas for service improvement.
- Maintain effective communication with healthcare professionals and external agencies to promote collaborative patient care.
- Facilitate access to health advocacy services as needed, ensuring that patient needs are met.

Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide expert clinical guidance to patients and their families, ensuring they are well-informed about their care and treatment options.
- Prepare patients for investigations and facilitate their journey through the upper GI service until discharge.
- Coordinate care, including managing prescriptions and communicating treatment plans to patients and their healthcare providers.
- Demonstrate clinical decision-making skills, ensuring high standards of care and timely interventions.
- Document all relevant patient information accurately in line with professional standards.
Education and Leadership
- Provide clinical leadership and ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care.
- Engage in continuous service evaluation and improvement initiatives.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, presenting relevant data and care studies.
- Support the development of nursing staff and promote evidence-based practice within the department.
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse with a first-level degree in nursing or equivalent.
- Teaching qualification or relevant experience is preferred.
- Masters level education or a commitment to pursue further education is desirable.
- Minimum of two years’ experience at a similar level in an acute medical setting, particularly in gastroenterology.
