Collections Management Officer
Are you skilled in the careful handling and packaging of artifacts with a keen eye for detail? Would you like to contribute to a team focused on documenting, assessing hazards, packing, and transporting a diverse array of items within our collection?
About Us
The Science Museum Group's National Collections Centre (NCC) is situated on a sprawling 545-acre Science and Innovation Park, serving as our central hub for managing and providing access to collections. The NCC is revolutionizing the care, management, and accessibility of over 400,000 objects and 1.5 million items in our Library and Archive. Our state-of-the-art collections management facility accommodates a wide range of items, from microscope slides to railway carriages.
We are currently seeking Collections Management Officers to join our NCC Collections Consolidation Project Team. This is a full-time position, requiring 35 hours of work each week on a fixed-term contract.
About the Role
As a Collections Management Officer, you will be responsible for documenting, conducting hazard surveys, assessing the condition, and photographing items already housed at the NCC. You will assist in the preparation, packaging, and transportation of items across the NCC facility and into a new storage area. Your work will involve a variety of Science Museum Group objects, ranging from large-scale items like aircraft and vehicles to smaller items such as television sets and cameras.
This role will follow a streamlined inventory process, systematically cataloging items to ensure accurate recording in our collections database. You will utilize barcode scanning technology and the Science Museum Group's database (Mimsy XG) to track and document a highly diverse collection, in addition to producing high-quality photographic records of each item. Training will be provided to help you identify and document hazardous materials within the collection, ensuring this information is accurately entered into the collections management system, along with proper labeling of items.
This position offers a unique opportunity to work within a dynamic team, gaining hands-on experience with one of the world's most significant collections in science, technology, and medicine. You will play a vital role in making the collections stored at the National Collections Centre accessible online through the Science Museum Group's Collections Online portal.
About You
To join our team, you should possess knowledge and experience in documenting museum and/or science and technology collections. Attention to detail is essential, along with the ability to work efficiently while maintaining high standards. You should be capable of collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team, ensuring communication with colleagues to meet project deadlines.
Relevant experience in object handling and packaging is crucial, as well as an understanding of collections care and preventive conservation. Importantly, you should be able to assist with the physical movement of our collections, employing effective manual handling techniques and equipment, such as trolleys.
What We Offer
As an employee, you will have the chance to advance your career within a prestigious museum group. We recognize the importance of work/life balance and well-being for our staff, offering various benefits, including:
- Support for personal and professional development
- Generous annual leave in addition to public holidays
- Employee assistance programs
