Job Title: Lead Artist - Visual Director

Company: World Makers

Location: Cambridge, UK (Hybrid role, 2 days/week onsite)

Job Summary

We are seeking a talented Lead Artist to join our team at World Makers, a dynamic video game startup based in Cambridge, UK. As the Lead Artist, you will be responsible for defining and maintaining the visual direction of our games, working closely with the art, design, and engineering teams to ensure cohesive, compelling, and aligned visual aspects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and Maintain Artistic Vision: Define and maintain the overall artistic vision and style for our games, ensuring consistency across all game elements.
  • Lead and Mentor Art Team: Lead and mentor a team of artists, providing guidance, feedback, and support to produce high-quality assets.
  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Collaborate with designers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure visual consistency and alignment with the creative vision.
  • Asset Creation and Oversight: Create and oversee the production of high-quality assets, including characters, environments, and visual effects, ensuring adherence to performance and technical constraints.
  • Stay Updated with Industry Trends: Stay updated with industry trends and incorporate best practices into the art production pipeline.
  • Advocate for Innovative Techniques: Advocate for and implement innovative artistic techniques and tools to enhance the visual quality of our games.
Requirements
  • Professional Experience: At least 5 years of professional experience in game art development.
  • Lead or Senior Artist Role: Proven experience in a lead or senior artist role, with a strong portfolio showcasing your work.
  • Artistic Expertise: Expertise in 2D and 3D art, including modelling, texturing, and animation.
  • Software Proficiency: Proficiency with industry-standard software, such as Maya, Blender, Photoshop, and Substance Painter.
  • Game Engine Knowledge: Strong understanding of game engines, particularly Unreal Engine.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude towards tackling artistic challenges.
  • Passion for Video Games: A deep passion for video games and a strong sense of visual storytelling.
Bonus Skills
  • Multiplayer Game Development: Experience in developing art for multiplayer or networked games.
  • Technical Art: Knowledge of technical art, including shader development and optimisation.
  • Console Game Development: Experience with console game development.
  • Art Direction: Strong understanding of art direction in different game genres.
  • Education: A degree in Art, Animation, Game Design, or a related field.
