Position Overview

The role involves overseeing and managing the colposcopy service, ensuring adherence to national standards for patient safety and clinical excellence. This includes the preparation and analysis of national reports.

Collaboration with the Clinical Lead Colposcopist and the broader colposcopy team is essential to enhance the development and implementation of the cervical screening service, in line with NHS England Service specifications.

The incumbent will be responsible for the daily operational management of the Specialist Gynaecology Outpatient department, ensuring effective and efficient service delivery.

Providing senior clinical leadership, expertise, and support to nursing staff and the multi-disciplinary team is a key aspect of this role, facilitating optimal patient care at all times.

The successful candidate must possess extensive theoretical and practical experience in the clinical skills necessary for running independent nurse-led clinics.

Additionally, the role includes offering clinical and professional guidance at the Directorate, Divisional, and Trust levels, as well as participating in the training and development of colleagues.

Main Responsibilities

The post holder will assume full accountability for the effective operation of the colposcopy service and the provision of integrated care. A comprehensive understanding of the NHS cervical screening program, gynecology, and health promotion is required.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinating all activities within the colposcopy service while working collaboratively with the colposcopy team.
  • Partnering with the Colposcopy lead consultant and the Clinical Director for Obstetrics and Gynaecology to achieve clinical objectives.
  • Acting as an autonomous practitioner in conducting diagnostic and therapeutic clinic sessions, with full responsibility for clinical management and care programs.
  • Collaborating closely with the Matron for Gynaecology to uphold standards and evaluate the training and supervision of nursing staff.
  • Engaging in the collaborative management of the Colposcopy service within the Gynaecology Service, recognized as a vital member of the senior nursing management team.

  • Significant experience at Band 7 or above in a clinical specialist setting.

Desirable

  • Demonstrated experience in managing change, leadership, and service development.

  • Strong leadership and initiative capabilities.
  • Advanced organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at various stages.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with other professionals as needed.
  • Proven ability to integrate nursing knowledge and skills with clinical responsibilities.
  • Proficiency in word processing and database management software.

  • Management skills, including team leadership and team-building experience.

Knowledge

  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge and experience related to colposcopy.

  • Familiarity with management techniques and process planning.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered nurse.
  • BSCCP/RCOG accreditation in diagnostic and therapeutic colposcopy.
  • BSCCP accredited trainer.
  • Specialist post-registration courses in Gynaecology/Sexual Health.
