Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time
Project Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team at the University of Cambridge, working on a project that aims to unravel the underlying mechanism of codon-level information regulation in protein synthesis.

Research Background

The genetic code contains 61 codons encoding 20 amino acids, with most amino acids being encoded by two or more synonymous codons. Despite producing the same protein, the choice of one synonymous codon over another plays a crucial role in gene regulation. This project uses artificial intelligence (AI) to study the regulation of translation and its implications in cancer research.

Methodology

Our group uses computational methods to study the inner workings and control of biological systems. We will employ cutting-edge deep learning techniques, such as foundation models, to address the challenge of making models that accurately capture the complexities of biological systems. The primary goal is to use these models to study the regulation of translation and its implications in cancer research.

Requirements

We welcome applications from recent graduates or final-year undergraduates who hold or expect to gain a First/Upper Second Class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject from any recognised university worldwide. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in computational biology, AI, or a related field, and excellent programming skills.

What We Offer

The University of Cambridge offers a unique opportunity for PhD study in a world-leading research environment. Our Core Facilities provide researchers with access to state-of-the-art equipment, in-house expertise, and training. We are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive working environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and scientific excellence.

How to Apply

To complete your online application, you will need to answer/provide the following:

  • Choice of project and supervisor
  • Course-specific questions
  • Research Experience (up to 2,500 characters)
  • Statement of Interest (up to 2,500 characters)
  • Supporting documents (academic transcripts, evidence of competence in English, details of two academic referees, CV/resume)

The closing date for applications is 31st October 2024. We welcome applications from all sections of society and are committed to ensuring that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.
