PhD Studentship: Unraveling the Genetic Code

Join the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute as a PhD student and contribute to groundbreaking research in the field of cancer biology. Our team is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to work on a project that aims to unravel the genetic code and understand its role in gene regulation.

About the Project

The genetic code contains 61 codons encoding 20 amino acids, and the choice of one synonymous codon over another plays a crucial role in gene regulation. This project uses artificial intelligence (AI) to study the underlying mechanism by which codon-level information regulates translation. You will use cutting-edge deep learning techniques to analyze 'omics' data and gain insights into the regulation of translation.

About the Role

We are looking for a highly motivated and talented individual with a strong background in computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related field. The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in AI and deep learning, with good computer and coding skills. You will work closely with our team to design and implement AI models to study the regulation of translation.

What We Offer

We offer a unique opportunity to work in a world-leading research institute, with access to state-of-the-art equipment and expertise. You will have the chance to work with a talented team of researchers and contribute to groundbreaking research in the field of cancer biology. Our institute is committed to providing an inclusive and supportive working environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and scientific excellence.

How to Apply

To apply, please visit our website and submit your application through the University Applicant Portal. You should select to commence study in Michaelmas Term 2025 (October 2025). Please ensure that you name the project (with reference code) and supervisor, where indicated. You are permitted to apply for up to three projects.

Eligibility

We welcome applications from both UK and overseas students. Applicants with relevant research experience, gained through Master's study or while working in a laboratory, are strongly encouraged to apply. You should hold or expect to gain a First/Upper Second Class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject from any recognised university worldwide.

Funding

Please see our website for information about applying for University funding to finance your PhD course. You can apply to be considered for most University funding through your course application in the Applicant Portal, or you may wish to apply for or bring funding from another source.
