Position Overview

The selected candidate will play a pivotal role within the Stroke and TIA unit, ensuring the ongoing provision of exceptional care to patients and contributing to the enhancement of services offered. The consultant will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to provide outpatient services for Stroke and TIA, alongside managing a dedicated weekly clinic. Active participation in the Stroke in-reach service and effective communication with the multidisciplinary team will be essential.

Key Responsibilities

The appointed consultant is expected to engage in continuous service improvement initiatives, focusing on:

  • Implementing the Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) framework
  • Contributing to the Cost Improvement Programme (CIP)
  • Adopting evidence-based practices to enhance operational efficiency

We encourage consultants to pursue fellowship with the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management, of which we are a recognized member.

Our forthcoming electronic patient record (EPR) system will replace traditional paper records, leading to improved, safer, and more integrated care across our services.

The QEH provides a wide array of specialized, acute, obstetric, and community services to a diverse population, demonstrating our commitment to quality and patient-centered care.

Our workforce of approximately 4,000 staff and volunteers fosters a community spirit and positive team dynamics. With around 530 beds across 33 wards and modern educational facilities, we are well-equipped to support our staff and provide a welcoming atmosphere.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality specialist diagnosis, treatment, and care to patients.
  • Participate in out-of-hours responsibilities, including the Consultant stroke on-call rota.
  • Ensure seamless Acute and Community Stroke Care in collaboration with allied health professionals.
  • Manage new and follow-up Stroke and TIA outpatient clinics.
  • Provide coverage for colleagues during annual leave and other authorized absences.
  • Participate in the weekend General Medical on-call rota, currently at a frequency of 1 in 18.

Organizational Responsibilities

  • Mentor and train junior staff, medical students, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Serve as a clinical and educational supervisor for locally employed doctors and trainees.
  • Actively engage in departmental and Trust matters related to Clinical Governance and audit.
  • Provide leadership and support for effective service development.
  • Ensure participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Develop clinical protocols, guidelines, and care bundles.
  • Uphold the Trust's Equal Opportunities Policy in all responsibilities.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews and agree on personal development plans with staff.
  • Attend relevant management training in health and safety and risk assessment.
  • Participate in personal objective setting and the Trust's appraisal process.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCP Part 1 and Part 2 or equivalent experience.

Essential Experience

  • Full registration and a license to practice with the General Medical Council.
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT in General Internal Medicine or Stroke.

Desirable Experience

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within six months of obtaining CCT or CESR at the time of interview.

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrated training in General Medicine and/or Stroke.
  • Meet the criteria outlined in the Specialist generic capabilities framework.
