The Opportunity
As a Lead FX Artist, your primary responsibility will be to develop realistic simulations for various elements such as particles, rigid bodies, fluids, cloth, fur, and hair utilizing industry-standard tools like Houdini and Maya. You will focus on the application of lighting and shaders to enhance these effects, working closely with Lighting Technical Directors to achieve the desired visual outcome. This role necessitates ongoing collaboration with different departments to ensure that every visual effect integrates seamlessly into the overall project. Regular discussions and strategic planning within the team will be essential to tackle creative challenges, with the goal of delivering effects that surpass expectations.

We are seeking a highly imaginative Lead FX Artist with robust design capabilities, capable of rapidly transforming abstract concepts into practical setups for use by fellow FX artists. A strong artistic background and the ability to visualize concepts with minimal references are crucial for this role.

This position offers a unique opportunity to make a significant creative contribution to a major upcoming episodic project.
  • Designing and producing images, elements, effects, pipelines, tools, and methodologies
  • Contributing to the design of solutions that employ a procedural approach to create the necessary effects
  • Generating reviewable composites of all FX elements for each shot, with the expectation that Lead FX Artists may also produce final renders
  • Possessing an excellent command of Houdini
  • Demonstrating prior experience at a senior level
  • Having a background in producing effects such as smoke, fire, clouds, water, steam, and explosions, along with simulation techniques for rigid bodies, cloth, and hair
  • Exhibiting a solid understanding of animation principles and a keen eye for motion
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with pipeline challenges, particularly in multi-package environments
  • Knowledge of the Houdini HDK and proficiency in Vex, hscript, Python, and/or Mel scripting
  • Experience with additional rendering packages and compositing software
