Key Responsibilities
In the role of Senior Oncology Nurse, you will be responsible for assessing, planning, delivering, and evaluating exceptional standards of specialized nursing care. Your focus will be on ensuring that patients receive comprehensive support in a secure, empathetic, and nurturing environment. This includes addressing their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs through effective communication with patients, their families, and your healthcare colleagues.

Job Duties
Patient Assessment and Care Planning
- Conduct thorough assessments of patient care needs and collaborate with patients to determine the appropriate level of nursing care, involving primary caregivers as necessary.
- Demonstrate proficiency in recording, monitoring, and interpreting vital signs.
- Report findings to the nurse in charge as required.
- Initiate appropriate nursing interventions.
- Attend Immediate Life Support training sessions.
- Develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Engage patients and their families in decision-making processes.
- Consider consultant preferences in care delivery.
- Function as an autonomous nursing professional.
Nursing Care Delivery and Evaluation
- Provide nursing care and lead changes in complex care situations with appropriate supervision, acting as an advocate for patients.
- Regularly review patient results and inform senior staff or physicians of any abnormalities.
- Recognize when changes in the patient's care plan are necessary and implement these changes in consultation with patients, families, and the care team.
- Prepare for discharge planning from the time of admission, instructing junior staff accordingly.
Team Coordination and Supervision
- Coordinate care for a designated group of patients while supervising junior staff.
- Allocate patients to staff based on their needs and the skill mix available.
- Ensure fair and equitable patient allocation.
Outcome Evaluation and Emergency Response
- Accurately monitor and document nursing outcomes, comparing them based on assessments.
- Evaluate nursing interventions related to pain management and symptom control.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to emergency situations, including early detection of patient deterioration.
- Refer to senior nurses and medical teams as necessary, maintaining calm and effective coordination during emergencies.
Nursing Procedures and Safety
- Ensure adherence to nursing procedures for intravenous therapy and other care activities.
- Utilize biomedical devices correctly and ensure patient safety during administration.
- Attend training for IV and chemotherapy drug administration, completing necessary competencies.
- Provide supervision and support to less experienced nursing staff.
Qualifications
Essential
- Registered Nurse with a valid NMC Pin.
- Experience in an acute nursing environment within the NHS or private healthcare settings.
Desirable
- Previous experience in a hematology or oncology setting is advantageous but not mandatory.
