Medical Oncologist

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is seeking two full-time Consultant Clinical Oncologists to join their team at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. This is a replacement appointment that attracts 10 Programmed Activities and an on-call supplement. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic and supportive environment, providing high-quality care to patients with cancer.
Main Duties- Provide a comprehensive Oncology Service, working collaboratively with consultant colleagues to develop and manage site-specialized cancer services.
- Work closely with established multi-disciplinary site-specific teams to deliver high-quality patient care.
- Participate in the out-of-hours service and provide acute oncology care.
- Liaise with surgeons, physicians, and staff in other specialties to ensure seamless care coordination.
- Supervise and manage junior medical staff, providing guidance and support as needed.
- Contribute to teaching, examination, and accreditation duties, as well as postgraduate and continuing education.
- Undertake clinical audit, continuing medical education, and contribute to the annual appraisal process.
- Engage in research, with the Trust's Clinical Trials department providing active encouragement and support.
- Work on both hospital sites, The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital, Telford.
- Develop excellent team-working skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multi-professional team.
- Deliver clinical and quality targets, agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
- Follow patients throughout their clinical pathways, ensuring seamless care coordination.
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust is the main provider of acute hospital services for around half a million people in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, and mid Wales. Our catchment area stretches from the Cambrian Mountains in the west to Newport and the fringes of the Black Country in the east. We have two main hospitals, the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in Shrewsbury, which are located 20 minutes' drive apart. Both hospitals provide a wide range of acute hospital services, including accident & emergency, outpatients, diagnostics, inpatient medical care, and critical care.
Detailed Job Description and Main ResponsibilitiesA formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues, on behalf of the Medical Director, within 3 months of starting in post. The job plan will be reviewed annually and will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. It will include personal objectives, detailing links to wider service improvements and trust strategic priorities.
The job plan will be divided into three main areas: Programmed Activities (PAs), Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs), and out-of-hours activity. PAs will include clinical activity, clinically related activity, and predictable and unpredictable emergency work. SPAs will include CPD, audit, teaching, and research. Out-of-hours activity will include on-call, which is non-resident and attracts a 3% supplement.
Any applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with other consultant colleagues.
