The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is seeking to hire a full-time Gemmology Education Specialist with the opportunity to advance to Instructor level after completing training in all educational programs. This role will be based in our London Campus, located in the vibrant Bloomsbury area, where you will create a positive, constructive, and engaging learning atmosphere for students enrolled in the On-Campus Gemmology Programs and Lab classes.

The ideal candidate will possess a GG qualification along with three years of relevant industry experience. A comprehensive understanding of gemstones, diamonds, gem identification tools, and the jewellery sector is essential. Experience in facilitating and delivering educational content is highly desirable.

GIA particularly encourages applications from candidates who are fluent in one or more European languages, with a preference for Italian and French. Please note that candidates must have the legal right to work in the UK without requiring employer sponsorship.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver GIA Headquarters (HQ) approved course materials in accordance with GIA's standards and content integrity.
  • Instruct students in the On-Campus Gemmology Programs and Lab classes, utilizing gemmological equipment such as microscopes, spectroscopes, refractometers, polariscopes, dichroscopes, audio-visual aids, and other materials to enhance presentations.
  • Exhibit knowledge and expertise in gemmology and GIA Education operations.
  • Promote sensitivity and respect within a culturally diverse classroom and work environment.
  • Maintain a positive learning atmosphere through effective classroom management.
  • Address student concerns, complaints, or issues promptly and effectively.
  • Advise students on academic performance and improvement strategies.
  • Collaborate with GIA London Management and/or other relevant Education staff regarding any student issues requiring further action.
  • Coordinate with HQ and other campuses to assist the Director in ensuring that global company standards are upheld locally.
  • Participate in Education meetings and training as necessary, focusing on course material instruction, student concerns, operational and administrative procedures, etc.
  • Proctor examinations; receive, correct, and process student assignments either manually or electronically through Blackboard.
  • Submit final student grades to Student Services in accordance with the required schedule.
  • Communicate effectively, foster positive relationships with colleagues and management, and handle interactions professionally, even under pressure.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues to ensure continuous improvement aligned with GIA's overall mission.
  • May require occasional travel to domestic and/or international locations for instructional purposes.
  • May assist with special projects as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of gemstones, diamonds, gem identification tools, and the jewellery industry.
  • Ability to demonstrate a command of theory and contemporary knowledge, along with ongoing study in the field.
  • Proficient in presenting course material and providing instructional feedback to students.
  • Capable of setting up classrooms conducive to learning and meeting GIA's standards.
  • Adept at relating to students and addressing their ongoing issues.
  • Ability to manage multiple administrative tasks and adapt to a fast-paced office environment with competing priorities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • A flexible approach to work and a positive attitude towards change.
  • Demonstrated service orientation and follow-up to ensure a professional learning environment and student retention.
  • Proficient in working within a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of relevant software applications (Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). Expertise in PeopleSoft and Blackboard is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Multilingual candidates fluent in one or more European languages are preferred (French or Italian strongly preferred).
  • Must possess the legal right to work in the UK.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Three years of related practical gem/jewellery experience required.
  • GIA Graduate Gemologist qualification required.
