Overview of the Position

In the capacity of a Pension Scheme Advisory Specialist, you will take on the pivotal role of guiding clients through the complexities of pension scheme wind-ups, working closely with Trustee Boards and Sponsoring Employers associated with UK defined benefit pension schemes.

Your contributions will be essential to the Pension Scheme Wind-Up Team, ensuring effective communication among key stakeholders and advisors. Your primary responsibilities will include delivering expert advice to clients, building strong relationships with key decision-makers to enhance project management, and providing mentorship to junior team members.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

The successful candidate will have a background in consulting for pension schemes, ideally within Trustee Executive, actuarial, or scheme management roles. A comprehensive understanding of pension management, experience in client-facing positions, and familiarity with new business initiatives and broader pensions consulting will be advantageous. You will work in close collaboration with other professionals in the pension wind-up sector and will benefit from the support of a larger team for each assignment.

Key Responsibilities:

Client Engagement

  • Managing multiple wind-up projects, serving as the primary contact for trustees and other stakeholders
  • Providing strategic guidance in the planning and execution of scheme wind-ups
  • Leading or assisting with both strategic and technical components of wind-ups, including evaluating scheme factors against insurer considerations, conducting lump sum assessments, contributing to funding reserves, and preparing surplus balance sheets
  • Identifying potential wind-up cases and assisting in their endgame planning
  • Contributing to the enhancement of the Scheme wind-up proposition, fostering team relationships, and sharing insights
  • Delivering training sessions to clients
  • Collaborating with client representatives to establish project budgets and timelines, ensuring service agreements are adhered to
  • Facilitating effective communication within client teams to support project delivery and understanding of client needs
  • Generating client invoices in accordance with established deadlines and internal protocols

  • Actively participating in the firm's growth by delivering high-quality advice as part of a client-focused team
  • Understanding client needs to provide tailored solutions and strengthen client relationships
  • Leading projects or endorsing new service initiatives
  • Seeking new business opportunities and supporting business development efforts
  • Engaging in the management, mentoring, and training of junior staff
  • Participating in internal forums to share insights on the firm's strategic direction
  • Enhancing the practice's technical expertise through ongoing professional development and peer review of colleagues' work

  • Ensuring efficient delivery of core services in alignment with utilization and recovery goals

  • Managing client assignments to ensure timely and budget-compliant completion, including maintaining project plans
  • Staying informed on developments in pensions law and practice
  • Contributing to the preparation of technical papers for internal and external publications as required

Qualifications and Skills Required:

Educational Background

  • Ideally, possess a professional qualification (or part-qualification) in pensions (e.g., APMI, AFPC, or IFoA)
  • Preferably hold an Honours Degree
  • Educational qualifications at least to A' level/Scottish Higher level or equivalent experience

Technical Competencies

  • Broader experience in areas such as corporate transactions, risk transfer, liability management exercises, and pensions aspects of sale agreements
  • Understanding of related employee benefits to provide strategic advice and collaborate effectively with other firm disciplines
  • Proven experience in a consulting role or advising UK pension funds within a complex environment
  • Technical proficiency and a solid understanding of the legislative framework governing UK pension schemes
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, capable of navigating ambiguity and change
  • Effective influencing skills and the ability to work positively with senior stakeholders
  • Proficient in written communication
  • Aptitude for rallying people around a vision and motivating them
  • Experience in managing diverse stakeholders with varying objectives
  • Strong problem-solving capabilities
