Position Overview

An exciting opportunity has emerged to become a part of our dedicated team at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust within the Ophthalmology department as a Clinical Trainee in Surgical Retina.

The selected candidate will engage actively in the assessment, treatment, and ongoing care of patients suffering from retinal disorders, both under guidance and independently. This is a full-time clinical training position for a fixed duration with the potential for extension.

Key Responsibilities

This role offers extensive clinical and surgical exposure to the evaluation and treatment of retinal conditions and vitreoretinal issues. The position may enable the incumbent to acquire essential skills necessary for advancement towards Article 14. We are committed to providing experience in specialized clinics and surgical procedures according to a personalized development plan. Areas of focus include Medical and Surgical Retina, Uveitis, Diabetic Eye Disease, and Age-Related Macular Degeneration, with a particular emphasis on Surgical Retina management.

Job Duties

Responsibilities will encompass:

  • Management of urgent cases presented during clinical sessions.
  • Participation in both informal and formal educational activities.
  • Oversight of patients referred to the Primary Retina Care service.
  • No on-call commitment, but the candidate will be expected to address acute vitreoretinal emergencies and provide guidance as needed when requested by the emergency services.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications

  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice.
  • MBBS or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience and comprehensive knowledge of General Ophthalmology and Retina.
  • Experience in Cataract Surgery.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in Ophthalmology.
  • Completion of 30-60 pars plana vitrectomy procedures.
  • Ability to manage stressful situations and assume responsibility.

Desirable Qualifications

  • FRCOphth or MRCOphth or equivalent qualifications.
  • Experience in Retinal Imaging.
  • Experience in the management of Retinal diseases.
  • Familiarity with Database Systems and Electronic Patient Records (Medisoft).
  • Demonstrated commitment to specializing in Surgical Retina.
  • Near completion or completion of Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology.
