Position Overview

A Consultant Anaesthetist role is currently open at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

This position will involve responsibilities across multiple hospital sites, providing essential anaesthetic services.

We encourage prospective candidates to familiarize themselves with our department and are open to inquiries from interested individuals.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will engage in the on-call rota for anaesthesia and will be tasked with delivering both elective and emergency anaesthetic care across various surgical disciplines. Additionally, the role includes providing critical airway management and participating in the initial stabilization and transfer of patients in critical condition. The work schedule will include a combination of standard shifts, extended hours, and night duties. It is anticipated that the appointee will undertake responsibilities commensurate with their experience and qualifications.

Surgical Specialties Involved

  • General Surgery (including pediatric, breast, and colorectal procedures)
  • Gynaecology
  • Urology
  • Trauma Surgery
  • Oral Surgery
  • Pediatric Dental Surgery
  • Cataract and Minor Eye Procedures
  • Plastic Surgery (including pediatric cases)
  • Obstetrics or other specialty interests (by arrangement)

There will be a dedicated trauma surgery list each weekday afternoon, and a flexible Day Surgery policy is in place.

Qualifications and Experience Required

Essential Qualifications

  • Medical degree
  • Full registration and license to practice with the General Medical Council
  • A minimum of five years of full-time postgraduate training, including at least two years in anaesthesia
  • Advanced Life Support certification

Desirable Qualifications

  • Primary FRCA
  • Final FRCA or equivalent
  • ATLS, APLS, or equivalent certifications
  • Formal transfer training
  • Completion of core training in anaesthesia (or equivalent)

Experience

Essential Experience

  • At least two years of recognized training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
  • Broad anaesthetic experience equivalent to that expected in a UK district general hospital or teaching hospital
  • Experience in pediatric anaesthesia
  • Experience in trauma anaesthesia
  • Critical care transfer experience
  • Ability to make independent decisions and recognize when assistance is needed

Desirable Experience

  • At least five years of anaesthetic experience or postgraduate training
  • Current NHS experience
  • Experience in intensive care
  • Ability to manage solo anaesthesia lists

Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience in leading clinical teams
