Nursing Unit Leader
Position Overview
The Nursing Unit Leader will oversee a specialized 25-bed Interim Wait Unit (IWU) within our healthcare facility. This unit will operate in accordance with established Bed Management and Transfer protocols. The IWU is led by nursing and Allied Health Professionals, with a designated consultant responsible for the care of patients admitted to the ward. Patients eligible for transfer to the IWU will be identified through daily specialty ward rounds and multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings. It is essential that patients considered for this unit have completed all necessary acute medical treatments prior to transfer. The level of care provided in this unit is expected to align with community or residential care standards, with anticipated patient stays ranging from 3 to 10 working days.
Key Responsibilities
The Nursing Unit Leader will perform all necessary care tasks independently and will be responsible for demonstrating procedures to, and supervising both qualified and unqualified staff members.
The leader will assess and determine patient eligibility for transfer to the IWU, serving as the primary contact for referrals and actively engaging in case finding during MDT meetings.
It is crucial to ensure that patient discharge plans are effectively managed and expedited according to the established protocols at the time of transfer to the unit.
The Nursing Unit Leader will contribute positively to the organization by exemplifying professional conduct and treating all staff, visitors, and service users with respect and courtesy.
Furthermore, the leader will be expected to fulfill all duties outlined in the responsibilities section, which may vary across different wards. Additional related duties may be assigned to support the ward environment, provided the individual has received the appropriate training.
