Position Overview
This role presents an exceptional opportunity for the right individual to design and implement a pioneering service model aimed at assisting patients with swallowing and communication challenges linked to acute mental health conditions. Collaborating closely with professionals in Dietetics and the Mental Health Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), the successful candidate will create effective training materials to promote safe eating and drinking practices, as well as efficient communication strategies tailored for this environment. The therapist will also provide specialized clinical interventions as necessary.
This is a fixed-term position for a duration of 8 months, intended to fulfill the service requirements. Candidates interested in this role should ensure they have the consent of their current supervisor before proceeding with their application.
Key Responsibilities
The appointed individual will serve as the Senior Specialist Speech and Language Therapist within the acute inpatient mental health wards. They will be tasked with assessing the swallowing and communication requirements of this specific patient group and managing a complex caseload of individuals facing a variety of intricate communication and swallowing issues. A significant aspect of this role involves developing and executing training programs for other professionals in the areas of communication and dysphagia, as well as offering expert advice and second opinions to the MDT.
The post holder will play a crucial role in establishing the speech and language therapy function and fostering collaborative practices within the multidisciplinary teams. This includes liaising with various agencies and disciplines, overseeing the clinical caseload, and managing the clinical team within their designated area. Responsibilities also encompass conducting best practice initiatives, complex audits, and research projects, as well as providing training and supervision for Speech and Language Therapy students and qualified professionals.
In collaboration with Dietitians, the therapist will also oversee the role of the Dietetic/SLT Assistant in this context.
