Salary: £40,000 - £55,000

Due to the ongoing expansion and success of Talent Torch's Planning and Environmental Services, we are seeking a qualified individual to fill the role of Principal Ecologist. This position will be responsible for overseeing all ecological activities related to our projects.
Key Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be tasked with conducting and managing ecological assessments to support planning applications and projects across the UK. This role encompasses both fieldwork and the coordination of subcontractors and specialized consultants. Additionally, report writing and desk-based research will be integral to the job. We expect the chosen candidate to lead the growth of the ecological team through effective business development and high-quality service delivery.
As part of a collaborative team, you will play a vital role in managing and organizing projects to ensure successful outcomes. The position will require extensive teamwork, client interaction, and the preparation of fee proposals.
You will also be responsible for developing and maintaining your own portfolio of projects and clients while providing support to colleagues as needed.
Essential Qualifications and Experience:
  • Membership of CIEEM (Associate or Full).
  • Demonstrated experience in consultancy, particularly in Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), and protected species surveys.
  • Valid UK driving license and access to a vehicle.
  • Familiarity with the Scottish planning framework, including planning policies and species survey/impact assessment guidelines.
  • Awareness of the risks associated with outdoor and remote working environments.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bat Survey License Holder.
  • Schedule 1 License Holder.
  • Experience in the renewable energy sector.
  • Degree in a relevant ecological discipline.
  • Expertise and licenses in areas such as great crested newt or advanced botany.
  • Experience as a named ecologist on protected species derogation licenses.
  • Experience in Environmental Clerk of Works (ECoW) roles.
  • CSCS Card Holder (ecologist).
  • First Aid certification.
  • Off-road driving qualification.
  • Health and safety certifications.
  • Tree climbing and aerial rescue qualifications.
  • Proficiency in QGIS/QField.
