London, Greater London, United Kingdom TFL Full time

Lead Power Systems Engineer

Salary:
approximately £61,000 (dependent on Skills, Knowledge & Experience) + TfL Benefits

Location: London Stratford / Various TfL Locations

Contract Type: TfL

Transport for London (TfL) Engineering is seeking skilled engineers to join the Power Team to contribute to the evolution of the Power Network across TfL.

Our Power Team plays a crucial role in the upkeep, renewal, enhancement, and expansion of Power Systems across the Underground, DLR, Trams, TfL Rail, and Crossrail (Elizabeth Line).

As a Lead Engineer in this team, you will spearhead initiatives addressing significant challenges faced by the organization. This position entails ensuring that the Power assets managed by LU are upheld in alignment with Standards and industry best practices (e.g., work procedures, competency, supply chain management, Quality Control & Assurance) to guarantee they are consistently "fit for passenger service" while managing risks to be as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP).

As a proactive and versatile engineer, you will possess experience in power system management and the modeling of power distribution networks.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are essential, enabling you to effectively convey ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.

In your capacity as Lead Engineer, you will engage in diverse projects throughout TfL, responsible for delivering engineering and technological solutions to supply power to railway systems.

You should be adept at simplifying complex challenges and possess strong analytical capabilities.

A passionate commitment to continuous improvement and the ability to work efficiently with a variety of stakeholders are vital.

This role requires you to be a reliable source of engineering counsel to various internal and external stakeholders, and your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading and conducting assurance activities within the Power asset domain in accordance with the Power Maintenance Assurance Plan, collaborating with LU Power Maintainers and the TfL Professional Head of Power.
  • Developing technical audit and surveillance schedules with associated expert support for detailed execution.
  • Delivering maintenance risk-based assurance and surveillance within agreed timelines, including asset-specific manufacturing activities and independent verification of frontline maintenance personnel's competencies.
  • Providing technical expertise and guidance to the Delivery Business and stakeholders to facilitate Maintenance Assurance technical decision-making.
  • Monitoring asset failures and safety-critical incident reviews, ensuring they are tracked to resolution, with associated hazards controlled and mitigations assessed.
  • Overseeing compliance with TANC (and similar) processes across all LU assets, reporting on overdue items, managing actions, and closing out, escalating as necessary.
  • Contributing technical input into Power Maintenance procedures and work instructions.
  • Generating information to keep both the Head of Engineering and TfL Engineering Profession Heads informed of issues, risks, and safety precursors, along with progress to actively manage and resolve them.

Essential Key Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • BEng/MEng Degree in Electrical Engineering (or similar), or HNC/HND with extensive work experience
  • Experience in a Power Engineering environment (e.g., LV, HV, DC)
  • Strong understanding and application of Asset Management principles
  • Ability to influence and operate effectively within a complex organizational structure
  • Experience in analyzing complex datasets with the ability to communicate conclusions effectively to a diverse audience.
  • Knowledge of Operations and Maintenance requirements for power systems
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the company, its physical asset base, primary contractual relationships, and regulatory framework
  • Proven experience in delivering innovative solutions
We are dedicated to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion. We aim to reflect the city we serve, enhancing our capacity for innovation and efficiency. Our objective is to make our recruitment process as inclusive as possible.

We are a disability confident employer who guarantees an interview to any disabled candidate meeting all essential criteria.

We utilize anonymizing software that removes identifying information from CVs and cover letters to ensure a fair process.

Benefits
In recognition of your commitment and expertise, you will enjoy an excellent benefits package and opportunities for professional growth.

Our benefits package includes:

  • Free travel for you on the TfL network
  • 75% reimbursement of the cost of a standard class Ticket for National Rail travel from home
