Manager of Engineering Biology Research Projects

Manchester, United Kingdom The University of Manchester Full time

Position Overview:

The Project Manager will oversee two distinct initiatives within the realm of Engineering Biology. The first initiative is a BBSRC-funded sLoLa programme, spearheaded by a leading expert in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. This programme seeks to uncover the fundamental principles governing interactions among microbial community members in environmental microbiomes, aiming to develop predictive strategies to enhance our understanding and management of microbiome functionality. By focusing on low diversity communities found in geothermal springs, the project will explore the metabolic, ecological, and evolutionary relationships that dictate the transformation of CO2-rich industrial waste gases into valuable products.

The second initiative is an EPSRC-funded programme dedicated to establishing a national centre and technical training hub for Biomolecule Engineering. This collaborative effort, led by a team of six Senior Technical Specialists, integrates various research technology platforms across biology, chemistry, automation, and computation, fostering a highly interdisciplinary approach to biomolecule engineering. The new facility will provide open access to cutting-edge technology and expertise for researchers from both academia and industry, while also creating a training centre that offers user workshops, tailored training, online interactive resources, and apprenticeship placements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the administrative functions of the Engineering Biology projects.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between project leaders from various institutions and industrial partners, as well as external funding agencies.
  • Ensure comprehensive coordination, execution, and communication of activities across all work packages in collaboration with the respective research teams.
  • Organize and facilitate:
    • Project activities across the university.
    • Regular scientific meetings among team members.
    • Secondments and placements.
    • Interactions with external academic and industrial collaborators.
    • Training workshops and bespoke training programmes.
    • Development of online training materials.
  • Establish a dedicated website to promote the projects and collaborate with the Biomolecule Engineering Centre team to manage requests for external access and training.

What We Offer:

  • Competitive pension scheme.
  • Comprehensive employee health and wellbeing services, including an Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Generous annual leave entitlement, in addition to public holidays.
  • Paid closure during the Christmas period.
  • Local and national discounts at various major retailers.
