About the Role

Sussex Police is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Crime Investigator to join our Safeguarding Investigation Units (SIU). As a Crime Investigator, you will play a critical role in conducting specialist investigations to pursue those who target and exploit society's most vulnerable individuals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate serious and complex crimes, including domestic abuse, child sexual abuse, stalking, and serious sexual assaults.
  • Correspond with solicitors, the Crown Prosecution Service, and partner agencies to gather and assess evidence.
  • Prepare evidential files for court and liaise with the Crown Prosecution Service to ensure a smooth prosecution process.
  • Perform the role of Officer in Charge (OIC) in court hearings and trials, representing Sussex Police and ensuring the effective presentation of evidence.
  • Develop and foster new relationships with partner agencies and external service providers to ensure effective information sharing and collaboration.
  • Represent Sussex Police at multi-agency strategy discussions and case conferences to drive forward investigations and ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals.

Requirements

  • Be a qualified investigator (PIP1) or have suitable skills and experience that would allow for grandparent rights.
  • Have a pass in the National Investigators Exam and commit to obtaining the qualification of PIP 2 within 18 months of appointment.
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge of crime policies and procedures, particularly the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996.
  • Have proven and well-evidenced experience in investigations, including conducting interviews and case building.
  • Be PEACE interview trained or willing to undertake this training to become proficient.
  • Exhibit excellent interpersonal skills, with the confidence and ability to negotiate and influence others through verbal and written communication.
  • Be capable of absolute discretion in handling matters of a personal, sensitive, and confidential nature.
  • Have the ability to interpret information quickly and effectively to select the right course of action.
  • Exhibit excellent organisational, planning, and prioritising abilities.
  • Demonstrate confidence, credibility, and resilience in challenging situations.
  • Be able to independently exercise own judgement in a consistent manner, within the confines of legislation and agreed procedures.
  • Be able to operate multiple computer database systems and be willing to undertake training to become proficient in all relevant Sussex Police systems.
  • Have the ability to analyse problems, make sound operational decisions, and have a high level of persistence and self-motivation to see an investigation through to conclusion.
  • Be able to work under pressure, have a methodical approach to work, and meet competing deadlines.
  • Commit to undertaking training for other specialist functions as required by the team, such as Sexual Offences Liaison Officer (SOLO), Family Liaison Officer (FLO), ABE Interviewer, and Advanced Interviewer (AI).
