At Ultra I&C Communications, we are looking for a seasoned Hardware Engineer to join our team, specializing in Satellite Communications and Troposcatter technologies.

In this dynamic role, you will have the opportunity to influence product development and contribute to a culture that prioritizes research and development.

As a Senior Hardware Engineer, your primary responsibility will be the design and development of hardware for satellite communication systems, overseeing the process from initial concept through to detailed design and testing.

Role Overview:

Reporting directly to the Head of Engineering, you will collaborate with a dedicated team of up to 8 engineers in the UK, while occasionally engaging with our larger engineering team based in Montreal. Your projects will vary from small-scale customizations to extensive new product developments, with timelines ranging from a few days to several months.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Designing printed circuit boards incorporating both analog and digital components.
  • Developing firmware to support hardware functionalities.
  • Providing technical assistance to production and other engineering teams.
  • Participating in electronic design reviews and offering constructive feedback.
  • Creating and executing test plans for both analog and digital circuits.
  • Troubleshooting complex hardware issues.
  • Conducting requirements analysis and deriving specifications from system-level to firmware-level.
  • Engaging in integration activities between software and hardware components.
  • Suggesting enhancements to tools, processes, and methodologies to improve quality and innovation.
  • Actively participating in project aspects to balance requirements, timelines, and costs effectively.
  • Contributing to customer-facing discussions through documentation and presentations.
  • Estimating time and resources needed for hardware and firmware tasks to ensure adherence to budget and schedule.
  • Reviewing technical proposals and assisting in providing accurate estimates for associated efforts, costs, and risks.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Expertise in designing digital and analog circuits.
  • Proficiency in analog simulation techniques.
  • Experience in embedded firmware development using C/C++ and assembly languages.
  • Familiarity with processor platforms such as Microchip/Atmel, Arm, Renesas, and Freescale.
  • Knowledge of VHDL for FPGA development.
  • Experience with embedded PC module integration.
  • Capability to develop complete designs using AMD Xilinx and Intel Altera devices.
  • Understanding of modern serial communication standards like Ethernet, USB, and PCIe.
  • Working knowledge of serial communication protocols such as USB, UART, I2C, and SPI.
  • Understanding of bare metal startup processes for microcontrollers.
  • Familiarity with EMC standards and design principles.
  • Knowledge of military standards is a significant advantage.
  • Awareness of FCC, EN, and IEC standards is beneficial.
  • Ability to create system-level power budgets.
  • Expertise in defining constraints for printed circuit board design.
  • Experience with electronic design tools such as CADStar or equivalent.
  • Experience in FPGA module design and implementation.
  • Familiarity with FPGA firmware testing and design for test methodologies.
  • Ability to read and interpret hardware schematics.
  • Experience with version control and bug tracking systems.
  • Exposure to best practices in firmware development processes.
  • Knowledge of AC-DC and DC-DC power conversion techniques.

Qualifications Required:

  • A degree in Electronics Engineering, a related Science discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • A valid UK Driving Licence.
  • Ability to obtain SC Clearance.
