Our team at Ultra I&C Communications is in search of a seasoned Hardware Engineer specializing in satellite communications and troposcatter technologies.

Role Overview:

In the position of Senior Hardware Engineer, you will oversee the hardware design of satellite communication systems, guiding projects from initial concept and architectural design through to detailed design and testing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Designing printed circuit boards incorporating both analog and digital components.
  • Developing firmware to enhance hardware functionality.
  • Providing technical assistance to production and other engineering teams.
  • Conducting and participating in electronic design reviews, offering constructive feedback.
  • Creating and executing test plans for both analog and digital circuitry.
  • Troubleshooting complex issues in circuit boards.
  • Performing requirements analysis and deriving specifications from system-level to firmware-level.
  • Engaging in integration tasks involving both software and hardware.
  • Suggesting enhancements in tools, processes, and methodologies to foster quality and innovation.
  • Actively contributing to project elements to achieve an optimal balance between requirements, timelines, and costs.
  • Participating in customer-facing meetings, including document preparation and presentations.
  • Estimating time and resources for hardware and firmware tasks, ensuring adherence to budget and schedule.
  • Reviewing technical proposals and assisting in providing accurate estimates for associated efforts, costs, and risks.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Expertise in designing digital and analog circuits.
  • Proficiency in analog simulation.
  • Experience in embedded firmware development using C/C++ and assembly languages.
  • Familiarity with processor platforms such as Microchip/Atmel, Arm, Renesas, and Freescale.
  • Experience with VHDL for FPGA development.
  • Integration of embedded PC modules.
  • Capability in developing comprehensive designs using AMD Xilinx and Intel Altera tools.
  • Knowledge of modern serial communication protocols like Ethernet, USB, and PCIe.
  • Understanding of serial communication standards such as USB, UART, I2C, and SPI.
  • Familiarity with bare metal startup processes for microcontrollers.
  • Awareness of EMC standards and design principles.
  • Understanding of military standards is a valuable asset.
  • Knowledge of FCC, EN, and IEC standards is advantageous.
  • Experience in creating system-level power budgets.
  • Ability to elaborate on constraints for printed circuit board design.
  • Familiarity with electronic design tools such as CADStar or equivalent.
  • Experience in FPGA module design and implementation.
  • Knowledge of FPGA firmware testing and design for test methodologies.
  • Ability to read and interpret hardware schematics.
  • Experience with version control and bug tracking systems.
  • Exposure to best practices in firmware development processes.
  • Understanding of AC-DC and DC-DC converter technologies.

Qualifications Required:

  • A degree in Electronics Engineering, a related science discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • A valid UK Driving Licence.
  • Ability to obtain SC Clearance.
