Job Title: Clinical Lead Physiotherapist in Elderly Medicine

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Clinical Lead Physiotherapist to join our team at Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust. As a Clinical Lead Physiotherapist, you will be responsible for providing senior clinical and professional leadership to the therapy team, managing a clinical caseload, and participating in the planning, development, and evaluation of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy services within the trust.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage a clinical caseload in Elderly Medicine, including dealing with complex cases.
  • Work flexibly to provide cover to other clinical areas according to the needs of patients and demands of the service.
  • Participate in 7-day working patterns, including Bank Holidays.
  • Participate in a respiratory on-call service covering evenings (until 10pm) and weekends.
  • Provide clinical expertise and leadership to a large team of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Therapy Support staff within the clinical area in the management of patients on the wards and in departments.
  • Lead on the annual appraisal of allocated staff and assist in the continual learning of all staff so that personal development plans progress and succession planning is promoted reflecting the needs of the therapy services.
  • Be responsible for the identification and management of clinical performance issues within therapy staff in the clinical area.
  • Develop working guidelines, protocols, and practices that enhance the patient experience in the clinical area in line with national and Trust policies in liaison with the Therapy leads.
  • Under the direction of the Head of Therapies, lead on the implementation of action plans from both national and local strategies, benchmarking standards, and clinical audits.
  • Represent the therapy services at specialty and trust-wide forums and provide feedback to therapy teams, leading on actions arising from them as appropriate.
Person Specification:
  • BSc Honours (or equivalent) in Physiotherapy.
  • Health and Care Professions Council Registration.
  • Experience of assessment, goal setting, planning, implementation, and review of clinical therapy interventions as appropriate to the speciality.
  • Experience of working in the NHS.
  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary team and making an active contribution towards its effective functioning.
  • Experience of managing a clinical caseload and prioritizing work.
  • Experience of assessing and treating patients with complex respiratory conditions.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Skills to communicate effectively with patients, carers, team members, Therapy colleagues, and other agencies.
  • Self-management skills.
  • Skills to effectively lead and motivate a team.

  • Flexible and confident manner with a positive approach and high levels of motivation.
  • Ability to manage work pressures to enable management of a caseload alongside involvement in non-clinical and professional activities.
  • Personal resources to cope when dealing with patients with complex conditions, acute or terminal illnesses, traumatic injuries, mental impairment, and challenging behaviors on a daily basis.
