About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Sustainability Manager to join our team at Rail Delivery Group. As a key member of our Railway Strategy & Policy team, you will play a critical role in promoting and supporting the development of long-term strategy and policy initiatives in sustainability and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide internal consultancy to project teams and staff on sustainability, decarbonisation, and related specialist subjects, to enable Rail Delivery Group to fully incorporate carbon reduction into business decisions.
  • Develop and deliver a sustainability plan for Rail Delivery Group, reporting and escalating issues as appropriate. The postholder will work with the Rail Delivery Group communications team (internal and external) to ensure issues of sustainability are considered across the business and beyond.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider Railway Strategy & Policy team to develop evidence-based policies for sustainability and decarbonisation, working jointly with government departments and Rail Delivery Group members where appropriate.
  • Support the development and rollout of the rail industry's Sustainable Rail Blueprint, coordinating Rail Delivery Group representation at the Sustainable Rail Leadership Group and Working Groups.
  • Respond to industry consultations, working alongside Rail Delivery Group colleagues and industry stakeholders.
  • Responsible for preparing annual sustainability reports.
  • Represent Rail Delivery Group as required, both internally and externally, at high-level industry meetings relevant to the role.
  • Provide expertise to whole-industry campaigns, supporting operators with their sustainability obligations and representing Rail Delivery Group and its members at relevant industry working groups.
  • Provide opportunities, such as discussion forums and events, for cross-industry sharing of best practice and collaboration.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree (or Masters) ideally in Environmental Science or Sustainability.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing sustainability and GHG reduction strategies (ideally in transport).
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations, industry standards, and best practices.
  • Experience of long-term railway planning, funding, and investment.
  • Understanding of the regulatory and long-term planning processes in GB rail/ or a regulated industry.
