Job Responsibilities

This position plays a crucial role in ensuring public safety by overseeing the daily operations of security personnel and support teams as a shift leader or Institutional Training Officer within a correctional environment. The role involves coordinating and evaluating the performance of team members on assigned shifts to maintain a secure, safe, and efficient atmosphere. Responsibilities include leading, mentoring, and providing guidance to staff members. The individual will manage work schedules, duty assignments, and the performance evaluation system for the team. Regular inspections will be conducted to verify adherence to security protocols, policies, and procedures that govern all facets of institutional operations. The position requires interaction with management, staff, visitors, inmates, and the public to uphold orderly and secure operations.

Essential Qualifications

Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, along with a valid Operator's License allowing driving privileges in the State of Virginia. DCJS Certification is required. A solid understanding of departmental and institutional policies, operational practices, procedures, and inmate programs is essential. Candidates should have progressive experience in security roles within the Virginia Department of Corrections, including experience in planning, scheduling, and organizing work for others, as well as managing timekeeping and duty rosters. Experience supervising corrections personnel is also necessary. A demonstrated understanding of security practices and administrative procedures is required. Candidates must be able to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide both oral and written instructions. Proficiency in the use of firearms, radio communication devices, physical control tools, and electronic security systems is expected.

Additional Considerations

Advanced knowledge in Criminal Justice or a related field is preferred, along with completion of LEAD training or equivalent experience. Familiarity with Evidence-Based Practices is advantageous. Certification as an instructor in areas such as General, Firearms, Defensive Tactics, and CPR is desirable. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other Microsoft Office applications is also beneficial.
