Job Overview

An exceptional opportunity is available for proactive and skilled Maintenance Technicians with a background in Electrical or Mechanical disciplines to join the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

The primary responsibility of this role is to execute both scheduled and urgent maintenance tasks to a high standard, ensuring the effective operation and upkeep of environmental engineering systems, equipment, and various engineering infrastructures. This includes systems such as heating, air conditioning, fire safety alarms, and specialized healthcare apparatus, as well as diagnosing and rectifying faults in mechanical and electrical devices and control systems.

Main Responsibilities

Deliver a comprehensive engineering maintenance service across all wards and departments within a multidisciplinary setting, ensuring adherence to Trust safety standards and protocols.

Perform planned and reactive maintenance tasks to a high standard, ensuring the efficient operation and maintenance of environmental engineering systems and equipment, including:

  • Heating and air conditioning systems
  • Refrigeration and various voltage systems
  • Steam raising plants and associated equipment
  • Medical gas systems and nurse call systems
  • Fire detection systems and building services controls
  • Standby generators and specialized healthcare equipment

Act independently in a leadership capacity, supporting the Estates Supervisor and Maintenance Managers in the daily management of services and assisting with contractor oversight.

Participate in a rotating shift pattern (4 on 4 off) and provide emergency on-call support outside of regular hours.

The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to versatility and flexibility, completing tasks related to Building Services systems in NHS facilities, including:

  • Conducting dynamic Risk Assessments for all work elements
  • Supervising and organizing Estates work in a hospital environment
  • Working autonomously to manage Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and reactive work requests
  • Liaising with area users to coordinate shutdowns of critical patient support systems
  • Effectively communicating with wards and departments regarding Estates issues

Interpret and work from all instructions, drawings, and specifications related to electrical or mechanical installations, adapting to new situations as they arise and sharing knowledge across various work procedures and practices.

Engage in problem-solving for technical issues and fault diagnosis on complex mechanical and electrical systems.

Adhere to statutory and relevant requirements, particularly concerning Health & Safety and applicable Codes of Practice.

Perform Planned Preventative Maintenance and daily duties involving the upkeep of all types of plant, equipment, and installations, including:

  • Boilers and water testing
  • Stripping down boilers for insurance inspections
  • Electrical system maintenance, including fire alarm systems and uninterruptible power supplies

Utilize the Trust Facilities Management System for recording, updating, and auditing estates records and compiling Plant Histories.

Conduct surveys for future maintenance, alterations, or improvements, including preparing technical reports.

Participate in a wide range of work across other estates trades as appropriate to enhance multi-skilling.

Carry Trust communication devices to facilitate immediate responses to reactive requests, planned maintenance, and emergency breakdowns.

Participate in on-call/shift rotas as required and be prepared to work additional hours in emergencies.

Undertake any other duties as reasonably required by line management, commensurate with the role.

Respond to switchboard and building management system alarms, including fire alarms, lift entrapments, and Medical Gas Alarms, for initial fault diagnosis and performance monitoring.

Utilize electronic devices to monitor and analyze reports from complex Building Management Systems and Security Systems, including data collection and first-line diagnostics.

Control the actions of untrained individuals during emergency situations, ensuring the safety of all involved.

Administration

Actively engage in the management and transfer of information systems, including completing all necessary paperwork (job dockets and timesheets).

Participate in regular team briefings and adhere to Trust policies and procedures relevant to the role.

Engage in the Trust Appraisal system and Personal Development planning.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Recognized Apprenticeship in Electrical or Mechanical discipline
  • City & Guilds Level 3 qualifications in Electrical or Mechanical

Desirable

  • Higher-level qualifications in Electrical or Mechanical

Knowledge, Training, and Experience

  • Experience in a similar role
