Position Overview
We are in search of a dedicated and experienced professional nurse to become a vital member of our preoperative assessment team. This role requires a collaborative approach within a multidisciplinary environment to ensure that patients are thoroughly prepared and optimized for surgical procedures.
Our preoperative assessment services are evolving, with initiatives such as NHS GIRFT recovery projects, pre-screening processes, and the introduction of a digital preassessment module.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will engage with the preassessment team to conduct evaluations on patients scheduled for various surgical interventions, including plastic, maxillofacial, and corneo-plastic surgeries. Responsibilities include:
- Supporting anaesthetic and surgical teams, as well as patients and their families.
- Coordinating with external organizations to promote preoperative health and ensure optimal patient care.
- Identifying patient needs and effectively communicating with scheduling, theatre, ward, discharge teams, and consultants to facilitate smooth admissions.
The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication abilities, demonstrate confidence, motivation, independence, and a proactive approach to patient assessment and care.

Job Duties
The post holder will be responsible for conducting pre-operative assessments for all elective inpatient and day surgery admissions, including those requiring local, regional, and general anaesthetics. Key duties include:
- Completing the assessment process, ordering necessary preoperative investigations, and collaborating with both internal and external multidisciplinary team members to ensure patients are well-prepared for admission, thereby minimizing cancellations.
- Working autonomously with exceptional time management skills, prioritizing referrals within the trust and primary care.
- Managing a personal caseload, including handling cancellations and following up on referrals and investigations for complex cases.
- Exhibiting clinical decision-making capabilities and taking responsibility for those decisions, including ordering appropriate pre-operative investigations.
- Collaborating with specialist teams to develop and implement preoperative care management plans, including making clinical decisions regarding referrals to the medical anaesthetic team and determining patient fitness for surgery.
- Responding promptly to abnormal results to minimize treatment delays.
- Providing health promotion advice and educating patients and their families to facilitate efficient discharge processes.
- Conducting thorough patient histories to uncover previously unknown health issues.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Current NMC registration
- Experience in preassessment
- Proven caseload management experience
Desirable:
- Completion of a preassessment course
- Experience in plastic/maxillofacial/corneo nursing
- Leadership or management experience
