Senior Legal Counsel – Place

Hybrid Working Arrangement

£75,273 to £81,411

The London Borough of Lewisham is a dynamic and culturally diverse community where professionals can make a meaningful impact. As a Senior Legal Counsel, you will be part of a friendly and collaborative Legal team, working on complex legal matters and managing a team of professionals.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert legal advice and assistance to the highest professional and client care standards.
  • Manage and take responsibility for service delivery for a team within Legal Services.
  • Deputise for the Head of Legal Services as required.
  • Allocate work to appropriate team members, ensuring adequate training and development.
  • Advising senior officers, the Monitoring Officer, and relevant members on legal matters.
  • Contribute significantly to decisions affecting Legal Services, including developing and implementing future strategy.
  • Project manage major tasks on behalf of Legal Services and assist in meeting strategic objectives.
  • Manage a team of around 12-14 professionals, ensuring adequate training and development.
  • Liaise with clients on service delivery, performance, and standards within the team.
  • Support Counsel as required.
  • Scrutinise reports drafted by staff in other directorates, ensuring they are robust and preparing legal implications paragraphs.
  • Manage finances and human resources of the team, ensuring business plan objectives are met.
  • Stay up-to-date with current legal and professional requirements, informing and instructing colleagues as necessary.
  • Introduce new procedures, as required, including those under ISO9001 arrangements, and prepare necessary documentation.

Requirements:

  • A current practising certificate (as a Barrister, Solicitor, or Legal Executive).
  • A can-do attitude with the confidence to lead and develop a team.
  • Experience of managing a team.
  • Strong experience in at least one of the following areas of law:
  • Regeneration
  • Property
  • Procurement and Contracts
  • Planning
  • Environmental Law and public realm
  • Commercial Law
  • Ability to anticipate problems and solve them accordingly.
  • Dependability and self-reliance.
  • Experience working in a local government setting.
  • Occasional attendance at committees may be required.
