Economic Policy Analyst for Zambia

Charing, United Kingdom LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND POLITICAL SCIENCE Full time £28,400

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is dedicated to fostering a diverse, equitable, and genuinely inclusive academic environment.
Do you possess the expertise required for this position? Please review the details below.

Position: Economic Policy Analyst – Zambia

Competitive salary starting from £28,400 net of taxes, commensurate with experience and subject to local market conditions, in addition to a 10% net salary retirement contribution supplement.

The International Growth Centre (IGC) collaborates with decision-makers in developing nations to encourage inclusive and sustainable economic advancement through innovative research. We are a global research institution with a network of leading scholars and in-country teams engaged in initiatives across Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. Based at LSE and in partnership with the University of Oxford, we receive significant funding from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). Our mission is to enhance the productivity of individuals and enterprises as a fundamental driver of sustainable economic progress.

IGC's initiatives in Zambia generate data, actionable research, strategic insights, and economic policy recommendations, focusing on areas such as natural resource management, public sector efficiency, agricultural development, and firm productivity, with an overarching emphasis on climate resilience and poverty alleviation. IGC Zambia serves as the knowledge partner for the Presidential Delivery Unit and maintains strong connections with the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, as well as other key governmental departments, allowing us to cultivate long-term, research-driven partnerships that yield both policy and academic benefits. IGC also plays a vital role in facilitating economic development discussions in Zambia, including co-hosting the Economic Growth Forum.

Reporting to the Country Manager, the Economic Policy Analysts are responsible for executing the country strategy, conducting economic assessments, identifying and cultivating opportunities for policy influence, linking researchers with policymakers, and developing policy briefs and synthesis/research papers. They assist researchers in managing research projects, monitor and report on the portfolio of research initiatives, oversee country program activities—including visits and events—and provide regular updates on research and policy developments. Additionally, they contribute to the ongoing evaluation of the program, support the dissemination of research findings to maximize policy impact, and may engage in IGC research projects when opportunities align with their interests. For this recruitment, we are particularly interested in candidates who can enhance our focus on energy and environmental issues.

Candidates should possess robust economic expertise, including a solid understanding of both macro and microeconomic principles, exceptional quantitative skills in economic analysis, a nuanced comprehension of policy challenges in developing nations, and outstanding communication and organizational abilities. A postgraduate degree (MSc/MPA/MPP/MA or PhD) in economics, development economics, public policy/administration, finance, trade, industrial organization, or a related field is required. Familiarity with Zambian policy matters would be advantageous.
